Many fans who watched the show-opening segment of last week’s episode of AEW Dynamite featuring William Regal, Jon Moxley, and Bryan Danielson thought the segment was a way to write Regal off of AEW television. A new report from Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio sheds a little more light on things and suggests this might not be the case.
During last week’s episode, Regal addressed the fallout from the Full Gear main event. Thanks to interference from the Gentleman Villain, MJF emerged as the new AEW World Champion, clocking Jon Moxley with Regal’s signature brass knuckles to secure the win and cost Moxley the title. Regal was then interrupted by his former Blackpool Combat Club protégé Jon Moxley, who told Regal that it was time for him to “run away” and not come back.
This led to speculation that Regal’s time with Tony Khan’s promotion was nearing its end, and that this was a way to write him off television. Meltzer originally stated that Regal’s contract with AEW was for a year, which fueled the speculation, though he has since walked back that claim.
On Twitter, Meltzer said that Regal’s own words suggested that his AEW deal was for three years and he won’t be going anywhere any time soon.
A correction from last night's show regarding Regal's deal. Based on what he said when he signed, his deal signed last spring was for three years.
