WWE is reportedly looking to help legalize betting on match results.
According to a report from CNBC, the company is working with Ernst & Young, an accounting firm that has worked with notable awards shows such as the Oscars and Emmys, to secure match results to convince regulators that there’s no chance of results being leaked out to the public.
Executives in the company are using the Oscars as an example in terms of betting to convince regulators in both Colorado and Michigan that betting on scripted match results is safe. Although betting on the Oscars is legal, it should be noted that some states do not allow it. One of the differences between the two is that the Academy Awards don’t have scripted results, which would make companies have to factor in as they consider whether to gamble on wrestling matches that already have a planned winner and loser.
If this goes through, this could have significant ramifications in the betting industry as there may be betting on other scripted TV content. As of this writing, discussions have yet to take place amongst betting firms.
