At a tryout back in May, WWE made the decision to not sign current AEW wrestler Wheeler Yuta. This is according to a new report from Fightful Select, who noted that the sources they spoke to said WWE’s decision came as a surprise.

The choice to not offer Yuta a contract was seen as a major surprise, especially since he filled out most of the criteria NXT staff have previously looked for in their recruits. This included his TV experience, ability as a wrestler, and the fact he is six foot tall and just 24 years old. Three members of the talent roster said the choice was a “shock”, as well as saying that they could tell a major shift was looming when someone with his ability and history was not signed by WWE.

Wheeler Yuta would make his debut in AEW in June, approximately a month after his WWE tryout. He is now a member of the Best Friends stable, alongside Orange Cassidy, Kris Statlander, Chuck Taylor and Trent.
