In what was a surprise to many, the team of Raquel Rodriquez and Aliyah were crowned the new WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions on Monday’s episode of RAW.
Winning the tournament after defeating the team of IYO SKY and Dakota Kai in the main event of the most recent episode of RAW, Rodriquez and Aliyah’s victory marks the first main roster title for Rodriquez, and the first in Aliyah’s WWE career.
Following the team’s victory, Dave Meltzer reported on the latest episode of Wrestling Observer Radio that the decision to crown Rodriquez and Aliyah as champions is due in part to an effort to get Rodriquez over as a top star.
Speaking on the show, Meltzer noted that, “They are trying to get Raquel Rodriguez over as a big star. That is one of the things they are trying to do right now.”
