WWE’s recent experiment with a three-hour format for SmackDown is reportedly set to end this summer, wrapping up a trial run that began in January.
Dave Meltzer addressed the potential change on a recent episode of Wrestling Observer Radio, stating that he was informed “months ago” that the switch would occur “essentially at the end of May.” Bryan Alvarez mentioned June 6th as a possible target. There is said to be “about a month” left under the extended format.
The additional hour has allowed for longer matches and more in-depth storytelling, but the three-hour broadcasts have received mixed feedback from fans and even some within WWE. The shift back to two hours is seen as a move to streamline the show’s pacing and enhance its overall presentation.
