The WWE Tag Team Championships changed hands in somewhat surprising fashion on this week’s episode of Friday Night SmackDown.
The Motor City Machine Guns were scheduled to defend their titles against The Street Profits, but Montez Ford and Angelo Dawkins were attacked backstage by some unknown assailants.
WWE SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis subsequently canceled the match, only for Johnny Gargano to pitch the idea that he and Tommaso Ciampa should fill in for them. Alex Shelley and Chris Sabin agreed, so the match was changed to #DIY getting the title opportunity.
Ciampa was shown still upset with Gargano, saying he only now did what should have been done weeks ago, and it seemed as though they were heading toward a disastrous challenge for the tag titles. Even during the match, Gargano pushed Ciampa, and they looked about ready to implode.
That is when the veil was lifted and Johnny Wrestling executed a low blow to Sabin, stunning Shelley and the audience. Gargano superkicked Shelley, laughed it all off with Ciampa, and a moment later after a double-team, #DIY scored the pinfall to recapture the WWE Tag Team Championships.
After the commercial break, Gargano and Ciampa celebrated backstage with Candice LeRae, further illustrating how this new heel turn has paid off for them as they laughed off the ruse that they pulled.
