John Cena spent years as the unquestionable top name in WWE, but that role left him with a heavy burden, according to Freddie Prinze Jr.
On a recent edition of his “Wrestling with Freddie” podcast, Prinze Jr., a former WWE writer, discussed John’s time leading the PG era. He said,
“[It was] a big burden to carry because you didn’t get to say all the cool stuff like DX did. You didn’t get to be in the last hour of Monday Night Raw when the rating could be a little racier and they could float to PG-13. That’s when Hunter would cut his promos. But John Cena had to cut them first hour, and it was a thankless job.”
Prinze also took aim at fans who threatened to riot if Cena won at ECW One Night Stand 2006 and other events, a threat fans never followed up on. He said,
“You dorks never rioted. They would scream ‘You can’t wrestle! You can’t wrestle!’ They would s*** all over him if they were of a certain age.”
Cena is currently in his 17th reign as a WWE World Champion. He will defend against Randy Orton at tonight’s Backlash pay-per-view event.
