Malakai Black’s tenure in AEW has come to an end, as he is departing from Tony Khan’s promotion.

Some speculate that Black might become a free agent in March, if not earlier. AEW CEO Tony Khan had previously stated that Black was under contract until 2027.

As we previously reported here on eWn, there are key figures in WWE who are big admirers of Black and view him as a potential leading talent within the company. Those close to Black noted that he felt more comfortable with Paul “Triple H” Levesque overseeing creative than with Vince McMahon, and he never established a good relationship with Khan.

The Wrestling Observer Newsletter is reporting that “while the specific date his contract expires isn’t known, it’s pretty clear the 2027 date that was said by Tony Khan isn’t correct, at least from the belief in WWE since they are talking creative ideas for him.”

Black joins the ranks of Miro, Ricky Starks, and Rey Fenix as talents that AEW isn’t currently utilizing, believing they may head to WWE once their contracts expire.
