Shelton Benjamin has spilled the beans on some of the ideas that were floated around for him in WWE following his return in late 2016.
Despite being re-signed that year, Benjamin wouldn’t return to TV until the following year as the ally of Chad Gable, replacing Jason Jordan.
In a recent interview with Metro UK, Benjamin recalled some of the ideas that were thrown out before being turned down by WWE. He said,
“[A] pitch I had, I wanted to be – this is when I came back the second time. I think Paige [now Saraya in AEW] was the general manager for Smackdown. The idea was, I will start off as kind of her bodyguard, but I think it was it was going to turn romantic and that was all – they were all set to do that, and then it just didn’t happen.”
“At one point, I was going to be Mr. Entertainment where, you know, I’ll be singing. I think we kind of teased it once with the Bellas where I was kind of singing Louis Armstrong to them… I remember Vince [McMahon] wanted me to be Mr. Entertainment. That never happened.”
Benjamin was released from WWE in September 2023 as part of the first wave of talent cuts following the merger with the UFC and the launch of TKO Group Holdings.
