Cody Rhodes won this year’s 30-Man Royal Rumble match and has expressed his desire to challenge Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Title at WrestleMania 40.
There has been a lot of talk about WWE’s plans for Reigns at WrestleMania 40, including the possibility of bringing back The Rock to face him. The Rock is interested in this idea. Despite this, WWE is reportedly moving forward with Rhodes vs. Reigns for WrestleMania 40.
Dave Meltzer reported in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that the match is still in play. He wrote,
“As late as last week, Reigns vs. Rock was not out of play. Rock wanted it and even said so in media interviews. We were told he was heavily pushing for it. But at that point, as late as after the Rumble, the plan was for Reigns vs. Rhodes and to do Reigns vs. Rock at some point in the future. Saudi Arabia was talked about for that match from a company standpoint with the idea of doing the match they had spent a year plus building toward, with the idea that perhaps having Reigns vs. Rock in Saudi Arabia would get the government to kick in more money both for the company and Rock. It also could be at next year’s Mania, but that would make many years in a row where that much was talked about for “next year’s Mania.”
