During a recent appearance on “The Flagrant” podcast, Paul “Triple H” Levesque revealed that former WWE Chairman Vince McMahon, despite the major influence of “Stone Cold” Steve Austin’s iconic “Austin 3:16” promo at King of the Ring 1996, was not initially a fan of it.
You can check out some highlights from the podcast below:
On Vince McMahon’s initial reaction: “At the time, I believe, Vince was pissed about [the promo] and hated it. Vince was like, ‘Make those shirts. I guarantee none of them sell.’”
On Vince McMahon changing his view: “They did it, and they sold, and Vince was like, ‘This is great.’ “To this day, Austin 3:16 shirts are some of our biggest selling merch.”
On Steve Austin supporting him backstage: “Steve was one of the few guys like, when I started in WCW… he was one of the guys who… would actually talk to me. I was young and just trying to get started, and Steve was one of the few who’d come over and say, ‘Hey dude, I noticed you were doing this — maybe try that instead,’ or whatever. He was super cool like that.”
