WWE’s Sonya Deville Recalls Being Too Afraid To Go Home After Kidnapping Attempt

WWE Superstar Sonya Deville has said she was afraid to return to her neighborhood and home following an attempted kidnapping in August 2020.

Deville was the victim of Phillip A. Thomas, a fan who broke into her home and attempted to kidnap her, and was later charged with several felonies.

Thomas was determined to be mentally incompetent to stand trial in a May 2021 hearing.

Speaking on “The Pat McAfee Show”, Deville discussed how she felt at the time and the long-term effects it had on her:

“It’s been a crazy ride and you never know something like that is gonna happen until it happens. And you don’t know how you’re gonna feel about something like that happening until it happens. I’ll just say, the day of, I was like, ‘Oh, everything’s fine. I’m gonna go sleep in my house tonight.’ And then by the time nightfall came I was – like, couldn’t even drive to the neighborhood. So, it’s crazy.”

In response, WWE changed her announced hair-vs-hair match with Mandy Rose at SummerSlam to a ‘Loser Leaves WWE’ match, giving Deville time off to recover.

Deville returned to WWE TV in January 2021 and has served as an authority figure.
