Author’s POV, Running Commentary & Thoughts:

Buy In

  • Some great promos and video packages ahead of this. If you haven’t been watching, this was a good way to catch up. It was also much more efficient than how WWE events tend to treat the kickoff.
  • Lots of problems with the B/R app. Let me tell you, we’re all aware over there. But it looks fixed now.
  • I’ve said it before that despite being a huge Orange Cassidy fan, the Danhausen stuff doesn’t resonate with me. If you loved the segment, I’m glad for you. I was more interested in my burger at the moment.

MJF vs. Wardlow

  • LOL at MJF doing the airplane taunt. Fantastic.
  • Referee Bryce caught MJF attempting to use the diamond ring. Now, MJF is offering to double Wardlow’s pay. Even quadruple it. No dice.
  • One powerbomb. Two powerbombs. Three powerbombs. (I hope you’re reading this in the voice of The Count from Sesame Street.) He doesn’t even want to get the pinfall yet.
  • How many was that? 10? And it’s over.
  • MJF is getting a neck brace and placed on a stretcher to be taken out for medical help. “You deserve it” chants ring out.

The Hardys vs. The Young Bucks

  • Never been an Elvis fan. Go ahead and hate me, but it is what it is.
  • I am a big fan of all of the stuff drawing parallels between The Young Bucks and The Hardy Boyz, though.
  • A little slow at first. I’m hoping that means they’re just going to build momentum as time goes on and not that they’re lacking the energy tonight.
  • What is going on with Jeff? He’s stumbling on the ropes.
  • Oh. His boot is messed up. Or…wait…why is he not even getting up after tagging out Matt? Curious.
  • This is not going well. Either Jeff is injured or something else is going on. In any fashion, this match should be 10x better than what it is.
  • Woof. This is rough. Everything Jeff is doing is a struggle.
  • Very curious to find out the story behind this match.

AEW TBS Championship Match

  • You’ve got that Buy In match, then a squash, a rough Hardys match and now this one? I don’t think the placement of this card makes a lot of sense. Hindsight, right?
  • Anna Jay is putting up more of a fight than most people normally get with Cargill, but it’s only a matter of time.
  • I don’t think Cargill should need to have three people interfering on her behalf. She’s a juggernaut in the division and hasn’t lost yet. Let’s not book her as “every other heel in wrestling” where she can only win by getting outside help.
  • BUT, I will say, Stokely Hathaway being part of this group is something I’m a fan of.
  • Kris Statlander comes out to help save Anna Jay from a post-match beating. Also coming out is “The Fallen Goddess” Athena (aka Ember Moon). Moon, Jay and Statlander are stepping up to The Baddies. Neat.

House of Black vs. Death Triangle

  • Who is this masked little kid? And before you say it, no, it wasn’t Rey Mysterio.
  • “What a standoff! What a donnybrook we have!” Okay, Excalibur. Throwing out the donnybrook term? Going old school.
  • Don’t ever play a drinking game of a shot every superkick in AEW. You’ll be blitzed in no time.
  • You get to jump to the outside. And YOU get to jump to the outside. And Brody gets to jump to…well, fuck that ring apron, right?
  • Nice Canadian Destroyer from Penta on the apron.
  • The lights go out. When they come back, Julia Hart is there to spit mist in PAC’s face. That gives The House of Black the edge to pick up the pin.

Owen Hart Foundation Men’s Tournament Final

  • Speaking of Owen Hart, he was so good. These two guys are, too. Hopefully, this match sets a new bar for the night.
  • Rock solid so far.
  • Adam Cole getting help from Bobby Fish works, unlike the Cargill stuff I mentioned.
  • I’m surprised there wasn’t interference from Jay Lethal’s crew on top of that.

Owen Hart Foundation Women’s Tournament Final

  • I had thought Soho would have this. Now, I’m starting to second-guess myself. She’s still my pick, but I don’t feel it’s as given anymore.
  • Okay. She’s also getting a special entrance. I still think it could be awkward to have Cole standing next to Soho with Hart, but we’ll have to see.
  • I wasn’t looking forward to this as much as the previous match. So far, I’ve been proven right. It’s not bad, but it’s just a little flat for me so far.
  • Soho’s face clipped the rope on the way down from the turnbuckle. Not a big deal, but that caught my attention.
  • Ruby’s Sharpshooter isn’t right, but I’m a fan of them doing the move here.
  • Reversal pin for the win to play into the Owen Hart history? I get it.
  • Baker offers a hand to Soho to pull her up. I didn’t see that coming.

Martha Hart is giving a speech and presenting the two title belts to Cole and Baker.

Mixed Trios Match: American Top Team vs. Sammy Guevara, Tay Conti and Frankie Kazarian

  • Let’s get that energy up, everyone.
  • To be honest, the most interesting thing so far from this match has been the entrance. Tay Conti as Maleficent caught my attention. Since then, it’s been pretty bog standard material.
  • As expected, VanZant doesn’t have the best rhythm. As I type that, JR asks “What the hell was that?!” to one of the VanZant/Conti spots.
  • Kazarian abandons them, only to stick around a moment later. Okay.
  • Sammy inadvertently kicks Tay and the crowd erupts more than anything else in this match with “you fucked up” chants.
  • TKO from Sky on Kazarian for the win.

Darby Allin vs. Kyle O’Reilly

  • Allin has a busted mouth. First blood of the night, I think, right?
  • Jesus. Allin’s suicide dive to the outside looked gnarly.
  • He did it again and went into a submission. I guess that was the plan, it was botched, and they just tried a second take.
  • Oh that’s the end of the match? I assumed Allin would win and this didn’t feel like the end. That was a surprise.
  • Frankly, I expected better. If you missed it, I don’t think you missed anything. That’s how I’ve felt about this whole event so far. I thought it would be way more entertaining than it has been, overall.

AEW Women’s World Championship Match

  • Thunder Rosa can’t keep her headpiece on without holding it. I expect her to hold on to her title, too.
  • Good job showing that Deeb has a countless list of tools at her disposal with how many adjustments she’s making into other moves at the start of this.
  • This pendulum thing Rosa is doing doesn’t look as intimidating as it would if that were a Cargill move.
  • If this match were earlier in the night, I think that would have helped out both this segment and the overall card.

Anarchy in the Arena

  • “Ladies and gentlemen….shit’s about to hit the fan.” LOL. Great way to start the announcements.
  • Let’s gooooo. I want to see this be total chaos.
  • Why is “Wild Thing” still playing?
  • No particular spot has stood out to me, but finally getting something crazy with everyone bleeding is EASILY making this the most interesting part of the night.
  • Jericho certainly wasn’t planning on that table collapsing underneath him.
  • Tables and barbed wire and fire extinguishers and whatnot. Now, gasoline. Kingston pours it on even Danielson, too, and that sparks Bryan to start fighting with Kingston. This is all breaking down. Moxley gets tossed through a table with barbed wire on it.
  • “Now, I’m gonna kick his fucking head in!” Gotta love how AEW allows people to curse instead of trying to keep it PG.
  • Jericho Appreciation Society wins with Hager and Jericho choking out Danielson until he passes out.
  • This was EASILY the best part of the event so far. Hands down.

Andrade (who just got married) is tired of the AFO being a bunch of losers. He’s welcoming Rush el Toro Blanco to the roster as his new partner.

Dante Martin interrupted a backstage interview with American Top Team. He’s going to be gunning for the TNT Championship. Scorpio Sky is up for the challenge.

AEW World Tag Team Championship Triple Threat Match

  • This was one of the top matches I was looking forward to. I hope they tear the house down.
  • Keith Lee powerbombing Jungle Boy onto Luchasaurus’s back was interesting.
  • Solid match going on. Again, if this had come earlier in the night, I think the momentum and energy would be so different.
  • Crowd pops big for the 3 big men in the ring at the same time.
  • Jeeeeesus. Keith Lee’s flip over the top rope to the outside. I would not want to be looking up to see that guy crashing down on top of me.
  • That spear from Ricky Starks got me. I thought that was the end of the match.
  • I thought Swerve and Lee had the win there after the powerbomb combo, too.
  • The champs retain! Hell of a match.

AEW World Championship Match

  • “Let’s go Hangman” vs “CM Punk” chants are impending.
  • There they are.
  • I’m rooting for Page. I’ll be disappointed if Punk wins, if I’m being honest.
  • Good match. I’m digging it. It has my attention without struggling like some other matches earlier. I’m invested in the finish. Here’s hoping I didn’t just jinx it.
  • Thumbs up on Page doing a moonsault, possibly jamming his knee, and then that factoring into the Buckshot Lariat not happening a moment later. Nice continuity.
  • Punk goes for it and can’t do it, either. Page goes for the GTS and Punk escapes it. Definitely teasing the crowd, and it’s working. Punk collapsed with the lariat a second time, too. Now, I’m assuming he was supposed to actually hit that, but couldn’t. Now, he’s clutching his knee.
  • Deadeye? More like the Full Moon now that Punk’s ass is out.
  • Page hits the GTS for a near-fall.
  • Ref bump. Time for a finish with shenanigans. Page grabs the title belt. He hesitates to nail Punk and throws the belt down. Page goes for a Buckshot, but Punk counters into the GTS. New champion.
  • I’m disappointed in the outcome, but this was a great match.
