Author’s POV, Running Commentary & Thoughts:

Buy-In

  • We’re starting off with The Factory, who I’m assuming will lose this match.
  • QT Marshall flipping himself over the top rope was almost a problem. Maybe he shouldn’t necessarily do that move and risk potential injury in the future if he can’t get it to be more fluid.
  • Goto pinned Solo for the win.
  • Uh…impromptu Nick Comoroto versus Lance Archer match? We don’t have enough matches on this card? I guess I’ll just go ahead and already write that Archer won.
  • I guess they were acting like Archer is a New Japan wrestler and that’s the crossover, there? That’s a bit of a stretch, considering he’s on the AEW roster.
  • Third up is Swerve in Our Glory against Suzuki-gun.
  • Keith Lee acts as maestro for “ooooh bask in his glooory” and Kanemaru plugs his ears. That made me chuckle.
  • I’m digging the style of this match so far more than the previous two.
  • Good storytelling element here of Swerve accidentally kicking Lee’s knee, giving more tension for that team and a body part for Suzuki-gun to work on to cut him down. Thumbs up for whoever produced this.
  • Good near-fall with the whiskey in the eyes and Lee kicking out of being rolled up. They got me on that one. I thought that was the end.
  • After Lee gets the win for his team, Ricky Starks and Powerhouse Hobbs pop up in the crowd to cut a promo. They say if Lee and Strickland are Shaq and Kobe, then they’re Jordan and Pippen. Swerve in Our Glory can’t call themselves the best team if they’ve never beaten Team Taz.
  • I’m rooting for The Acclaimed Ass Boys here, are you? BIG pop from the crowd, at least.
  • The rap was great, as always.
  • Right after the rap, Danhausen interrupted with a video to say he has a surprise. Austin and Colten ran to the back, leaving the NJPW Dojo to have a 4-on-2 against Billy Gunn and Max Caster.
  • This Kevin Knight guy is pretty damn athletic. He could probably give Montez Ford a run for his money on a frog splash.
  • Even with the disadvantage, Caster and Gunn score the win.

Trios Tag Team Match: Jericho, Guevara and Suzuki vs. Kingston, Yuta and Umino

  • I’m a big fan of this having stakes with the winners getting the advantage for Blood & Guts. Rather than it just being a match for the sake of it, this ups the ante. It makes me think even more so that Umino is losing it for his team.
  • Crowd pops for Kingston in the ring with Jericho. Jericho tags out and the pop is even bigger for Kingston in the ring with Suzuki.
  • Goddamn, these chops!
  • Jericho gets in now that Kingston is down and out. Good heel work there. Classic.
  • Guevara is consistently one of my favorite people to watch in the ring on the AEW roster.
  • Suzuki hyping up the crowd, only to not actually jump to the outside, was fun.
  • Guevara nails Umino in the back with the bat, but Umino’s still fighting back and even puts him in the Walls of Jericho. This is great.
  • Umino eats a Judas Effect for the loss, but they really made sure he didn’t look weak in the process. Great job.

Winners Take All Three-Way Match

  • This should be awesome.
  • I still don’t get why Roppongi Vice is here, outside of to take the pin.
  • Biiig pop for FTR, as they should get.
  • Ah hell. Dax Harwood is injured. This event really is cursed.
  • Yeaaaah! Dax is back!
  • For a SPLIT second, I thought Roppongi Vice would win until Cash Wheeler broke up the pin. That goes to show how good this match is. They got me.
  • And then, they got me with a roll-up right after.
  • FTR with the win over Rocky Romero!!

Backstage, Tony Schiavone spoke to both Jay White and Juice Robinson. Robinson said he’s never lost the IWGP United States Championship and the match later is just basically a No. 1 contender’s match. White talked about how he’ll beat all three of his opponents and retain his title, too, “and that is just too sweet.”

AEW All-Atlantic Championship Four-Way Match

  • I’m rooting for Pac or Miro here, but specifically Pac.
  • It seems the crowd is more pro-Miro than anyone else.
  • Not bad so far, but nothing to really talk about until Connors tackled Miro through a table on the outside.
  • Miro’s got Pac locked in, but Black spit the mist in Miro’s face. Pac’s able to eventually break out with a 450 on Black and forces Connors to tap to The Brutalizer!

Trios Tag Team Match: Young Bucks and El Phantasmo vs. Dudes with Attitude

  • Sting isn’t coming out. Are we doing another angle of taking someone out of the match?
  • Nope. He’s just strategizing to take out Hikuleo and even the odds.
  • El Phantasmo playing around and showing his athleticism gets a “holy shit” chant. Young Bucks are playing around a lot, too. Audience loves it.
  • The sudden Death Valley Driver from Takagi was a spot most people would just breeze right by, but I was impressed.
  • El Phantasmo punches Sting below the belt. Lots of crotch shots in this match. But Sting totally shrugs off that and some superkicks for a moment. He’s being positioned as a monster, which is fun.
  • El Phantasmo with the tight-rope moonsault to the outside. Nice.
  • Another shot to the balls (after another nipple grab).
  • Takagi pins Phantasmo for the victory for “Los Sting Ingobernables” as they referred to them on commentary.

Backstage, Jericho tells Umino that he did a great job and earned his respect, only to then throw a fireball in his face.

AEW Women’s World Championship Match

  • I really wish this would have had more of a build than just “the match is happening because Toni Storm grabbed the belt a few times and posed.” I’m a fan of both, but not into this yet. Let’s see if they can spark my interest more once the bell rings.
  • A little too early into the match to do the whole “What can I do to beat them!?” bewilderment.
  • Storm’s taunt about the hip attack will become a GIF. The hip attack itself had a rather loud smack to it, which really makes it seem like she just blasted her in the head. That could be a damn finisher with how loud that was.
  • When I decided to update this and not pay attention, Rosa gets the win with a move borrowed by Dustin Rhodes. The crowd wasn’t even ready to react, it seems.
  • One of the weakest matches so far. Both are capable of much better, but it just didn’t have the same energy.

IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship Match

  • This is one of the matches I’m most excited for. Let’s go!
  • There’s Jim Ross. I was wondering when he would come into the mix.
  • Any time Orange Cassidy is in the ring is a win.
  • Aussie Open helping toss Will Ospreay into Cassidy on the outside gets a thumbs up.
  • Another 👍 for the spinning backbreaker.
  • Lots of fun back-and-forth action, as expected.
  • A few near-falls that really had the fans on their feet for a potential title change. This crowd is erupting every chance Cassidy kicks out or gets a close 2-count.
  • Ultimately, Ospreay retains after arguably the peak of the crowd being into Cassidy winning. Good progression.
  • After the match, Ospreay and Aussie Open wanted to humiliate Cassidy. Roppongi Vice came out to help, but couldn’t get the job done. Then, Katsuyori Shibata came out to a “holy shit” chant and took them out. To show his appreciation, Cassidy put his sunglasses on Shibata.

Moment of truth time. Is Bryan Danielson’s replacement Cesaro, or someone else? I’m still thinking it will be Cesaro.

Zack Sabre Jr. vs. Claudio Castagnoli

  • Huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge pop for Claudio! A great new addition to AEW!
  • IMMEDIATELY hits an upper-cut and damn near follows that up with the win. Right out of the gate. Damn.
  • How is Castagnoli this freakin’ strong all the time? Jeez. Carrying Sabre Jr with one arm and tossing him back into the ring and all baffles me.
  • It’s time for a swing! Nope, Sabre reversed for some heel heat.
  • “This is wrestling” chant erupts.
  • Castagnoli scores the win with a powerbomb.

IWGP Heavyweight Championship Four-Way Match

  • Okada gets one of the bigger pops of the night, too.
  • Undoubtedly, the crowd is going to pop most if Okada wins, then Page, then Cole, then White.
  • Great timing with Page’s moonsault and Cole’s kick to the face. Very nice.
  • Cole backstabs White. There goes that partnership.
  • Buckshot? Nope. Deadeye. Now a Buckshot. White’s getting pinned aaaaand Okada breaks it up.
  • “Fight forever” chant.
  • I’m conditioned to think when the camera zooms out, that someone’s getting a hug and not that it’s an Okada pose.
  • What happened with that finish? Was that the wrong count or something? Is Cole concussed or something?

Interim AEW World Championship Match

  • Split crowd. That’s good. Personally, I’m rooting for Tanahashi.
  • Something is causing the crowd to be entirely distracted, looking off to the side. It sounds like they’re chanting “you fucked up” and then cheering.
  • Apparently, someone was being escorted out, tried to fight with security and had a 3-on-1 against him. That’s what the crowd was distracted by.
  • Moxley slams Tanahashi through a table on the outside with a uranage.
  • New Japan has a 20-count. I was nervous that Tanahashi might forget that and get counted out.
  • Mox is bleeding. I’m not surprised. He knows that will instantly upgrade the match in a lot of fans’ eyes.
  • Not the best match of the night, but I’m not going to turn my nose up to it by any means, that’s for sure.
  • Moxley goes to shake Tanahashi’s hand, but Jericho and Daniel Garcia stormed the ring to attack both of them. Down comes Kingston to help. Followed by Santana, Ortiz and Yuta. The rest of The Jericho Appreciation Society is now out, too. Time for Claudio? Yup. Angelo Parker goes for a swing with 20 revolutions!
