Author’s POV, Running Commentary & Thoughts:

Kickoff – Mixed Tag Team Match: Chase University (Andre Chase, Duke Hudson, Thea Hail and Tyler Bate) vs. Schism (Joe Gacy, Ava Raine, Jagger Reid, Rip Fowler)

  • Schism against Chase U has been moved to the kickoff.
  • Let’s see what Ava Raine has to offer in her first televised match.
  • Tyler Bate’s ring gear is awful. It looks like he’s wearing a diaper and socks.
  • I’m sure the nerves are top notch, but I can’t say Ava’s minute or so in the ring was a wow moment for me. She’s clearly not ready yet…still.
  • Duke Hudson has succumbed to the temptation and joined Schism. April Fools!
  • Chase U gets the win! I’m surprised about that. I just naturally assumed the whole “Schism gets control over Chase University” storyline was an obvious next direction. Good for them for tricking me.

NXT Women’s Championship Ladder Match: Roxanne Perez (c) vs. Gigi Dolin vs. Indi Hartwell vs. Lyra Valkyria vs. Tiffany Stratton vs. Zoey Stark

  • I didn’t expect this to kick things off. Or for half of the competitors in the match to get entrances on the kickoff, and for Lyra Valkyria to be one of the three not relegated to that spot.
  • Speaking of Lyra, the crowd is not at all buying into her chances to win. Even when she’s 90% up the ladder, there isn’t any buzz. It’s as though the crowd is collectively saying “Nope. Not happening. I’ll save my breath.”
  • Sadly, Indi just got the same reaction.
  • It’s always funny when the ladders aren’t set up properly, so Superstars have to actively ignore logic to move them into other positions to set up something that will happen in the future. Zoey Stark just did that with setting up a ladder between another ladder and the middle rope.
  • Dolin takes the back bump into the ladder Zoey had set up, due to an interfering Jacy Jayne.
  • Stratton is forced to front-flip off the ladder, spilling onto a few others on the outside. Nice spot.
  • Dexter Lumis is here to help Indi climb to win the title!!! Wow! I didn’t expect that outcome.

NXT Tag Team Championship Triple Threat Match: Gallus (c) vs. The Creed Brothers vs. Tony D’Angelo and Channing “Stacks” Lorenzo

  • Brutus didn’t come remotely close to touching anybody on his cannonball Doomsday Device type maneuver.
  • Joe Coffey is in the house to help Gallus out, and after a super generic and rather fast match, the tag team champions retain.
  • This was super flat. There wasn’t anything to it, and the ending being so blah didn’t help.

NXT North American Championship Fatal 5-Way Match: Wes Lee (c) vs. Axiom vs. Dragon Lee vs. Ilja Dragunov vs. JD McDonagh

  • I really hope this crowd wakes up with this match.
  • Dragunov’s on something like his fifth theme and none of them are as catchy as the one they seem to refuse to bring back that he had the longest. None of the songs ever match up to his maestro hand movements, either.
  • Dragon Lee’s entrance was really botched. The whole thing was basically frozen in an odd spot. It’s like they had the Axiom filter on and then, the program crashed.
  • Damn. That smack from Dragon on McDonagh to start this off was loud.
  • Dragon Lee is looking great here. He’s gotta be someone they bring up to the main roster sooner rather than later.
  • After the Indi Hartwell win, I’m no longer fully counting out Axiom having a chance here.
  • Hopefully, Dragon Lee doesn’t have an injured knee after catching the ring apron.
  • Nice DDT spot from Axiom.
  • Wes Lee gets the win over Dragunov.

Unsanctioned Match: Grayson Waller vs. Johnny Gargano

  • Grayson Waller really carries himself like a true WWE Superstar. He’s ready for the main roster.
  • Thumbs up on Johnny Gargano’s ring gear. Very cool.
  • Booker T just took a spill from the commentary table. So did all the candy Vic Joseph has at his part of the desk.
  • Big fan of Candice LeRae getting some kendo stick shots in there on Waller. Waller’s back is bloody and bruised and looking gnarly.
  • Coast to Coast (sort of) from Waller with the trash can on Gargano. Nice.
  • Waller is also really good with that leap into the ring. He never misses that.
  • Very good match. Easily the best of the afternoon so far.
  • Dexter and Indi came out to celebrate with Johnny and Candice. No Austin Theory to fully flesh out The Way (but that’s to be expected).

Backstage, Tony D’Angelo and Channing “Stacks” Lorenzo are upset about losing the tag title match. Pretty Deadly pop up to talk to them and say that they themselves are the only team that can beat Gallus. A brawl almost erupts, but officials immediately break them apart.

NXT Women’s Tag Team Championship Match: Fallon Henley and Kiana James (c) vs. Alba Fyre and Isla Dawn

  • Not too much to say about this match, to be honest.
  • Kiana James wants Brooks Jensen to hand her the giant purple purse she brought to the ring, to use as a foreign object to cheat to win. Henley and Josh Briggs convinced him not to.
  • And because of that, now, we have new champions, as James was pinned.

NXT Championship Match: Bron Breakker (c) vs. Carmelo Hayes

  • The crowd seems more in favor of Hayes. At least, early on.
  • Even matchup. Both are getting equal offense.
  • Trick Williams saves Melo from being slammed down by Breakker, which prompts the ref to toss Williams from ringside.
  • The boo/yay exchange of strikes is boo for Breakker, so that hasn’t changed throughout the match, even though the champ does have his supporters in the crowd.
  • Ref is down after Breakker spears Hayes through him.
  • Hayes is tapping out, but with the ref down, no one is there to see it. Nor is anyone able to see Trick come back and nail Breakker in the back with the title belt. But it’s a two-count!
  • I can hear a “That was three!” chant from the crowd momentarily.
  • Melo still capitalizes and hits his leg drop from the top rope and we have a new NXT champion!
  • Breakker hands the title to Hayes and raises his hand (despite how he has every reason to think this is b.s. since Hayes absolutely cheated to win).
