Author’s POV, Running Commentary & Thoughts:
Zero Hour Pre-Show
- Best Friends, Rocky Romero and Danhausen beat The Factory to start off the night. This revolved around Danhausen popping up with his spike and jar of teeth and getting some revenge on QT Marshall, in particular. Nick Comoroto took the pin from Danhausen.
- Konosuke Takeshita is the newest signing to AEW. He tells Renee Young that he’s excited to be on the roster.
- Next up is Ricky Starks against Brian Cage with Ethan Page on commentary. Starks wins by pinfall.
- Eddie Kingston beats Jun Akiyama by pinfall and cuts a promo after the match about hoping he did some of the other legends proud and tells everyone to order the pay-per-view. He says Jon Moxley is going to beat the piss out of MJF, which gets some boos, but he says MJF is still a piece of shit. He starts running down the rest of the card and realizes he’s out of time, so he peaces out.
Steel Cage Match
- Jungle Boy is bloodied up with a full crimson mask.
- They’ve found a way to battle outside the cage, eventually leading to Luchasaurus tossing some steel chairs into the ring to use later.
- Oof. Luchasaurus chokeslammed Jack Perry through a chair. Great sound for that metallic thud. It doesn’t net Luchasaurus the win, though. Two-count.
- Great commentary work talking about the heart Jungle Boy has, and then turning that into but every time his heart beats, more blood pumps out and he’ll get even woozier. It’s such a small moment, but that’s probably going to be one of my favorite parts of the night.
- Jungle Boy jumps off the top of the cage and lands an elbow drop through Luchasaurus on top of a table, then makes Luchasaurus tap out for the win!
- Great match. Gotta love it.
AEW World Trios Championship Match
- The Elite get a special entrance to “Carry on My Wayward Son” by Kansas.
- There’s a “f*ck CM Punk” chant going on! That’s followed with a chant for Colt Cabana.
- Good spot with a hurricanrana to the outside with a stack of everyone getting taken out.
- Pac’s able to hit a Black Arrow and go straight into The Brutalizer on Kenny Omega, but Nick Jackson makes the save.
- Penta distracts the referee while Pac tosses his hammer to Fenix. Fenix decides to toss it aside and be more honorable and walks right into a V-Trigger from Omega that eventually leads to a two-count.
- Ultimately, Fenix decides to use the hammer on Omega, which nets Death Triangle the victory. They retain the titles, but Fenix is upset with himself for doing that.
AEW TBS Championship Match
- Nyla Rose’s entrance is on a low-rider.
- Jade Cargill has a Cheetara inspired Thundercats ring gear on, which looks pretty awesome.
- Power vs. power. It’s interesting to see Cargill not the fully dominant person for the first time.
- Jaded for the win. Cargill retains.
ROH World Championship Four-Way
- What the hell is Sammy Guevara wearing?
- “Hold #712 Armbar” sign in the crowd popped me. Such a classic moment.
- Castagnoli and Danielson work together to take Guevara and Jericho out temporarily. Then, they decide to shake hands and go at it against each other in the spirit of competition.
- Jericho hits a Lionsault on both Danielson and Guevara. That might lead to the breakdown of The Jericho Appreciation Society working together in this match.
- Yup. Guevara and Jericho are now going at it.
- There’s a long series of great maneuvers and near-falls, all leading up to Jericho scoring the pin on Castagnoli to retain.
Dr. Britt Baker, D.M.D. vs. Saraya
- I’m not even hoping this will be a good match, as I don’t expect that. All I’m hoping is that Saraya is ACTUALLY cleared to compete and this doesn’t end up being some massive mistake.
- They’re playing into the injury, but it’s just making the crowd silent. These fans are in the same boat I am, I think. They’re too concerned to really enjoy the match.
- Saraya gets the win. Everyone will overrate this match just because they’re happy she’s back and claim that it was some instant classic and such, I bet. I’m just glad this didn’t turn into a problematic situation.
AEW TNT Championship Three-Way Match
- How is Wardlow able to jump off the top rope and pull off lucha libre moves??
- Wardlow slams Hobbs down with two powerbombs. The symphony continues with a third. But the fourth was cut off by Joe, who nailed Wardlow with the title belt and capitalized by locking Hobbs in a submission to win the title!
Backstage, Orange Cassidy interrupts Chris Jericho’s interview to say Tomohiro Ishii wants a shot at the ROH World Championship. Jericho badmouths Ishii, but accepts. Cassidy then gloats about the All-Atlantic Championship to Jake Hager to set up a title defense there, and compliments his hat.
No DQ Tag Team Match: Darby Allin and Sting vs. Jay Lethal and Jeff Jarrett
- Darby Allin and Sting set up a bodybag for their entrance to throw off Lethal and Jarrett so they can get the jump on them.
- Satnam Singh was able to catch Allin during a fall and just toss him onto the stage like he weighs nothing.
- Allin tried for another Coffin Drop, only to get a guitar to the back in the process. But he pops right back onto his feet a moment later to virtually no-sell it.
- Lethal gets flattened with a Scorpion Death Drop (which almost didn’t work out, as Sting fell backward in the process) followed by a Coffin Drop, allowing Allin to get the pin.
AEW Interim Women’s World Championship Match
- Either Hayter wins this title, or she loses because Baker does something to screw her over, unintentionally or not.
- So far, this match hasn’t been bad, but this is the first time I’m feeling that “AEW pay-per-views go too long” wall. It’s 10:50 and we still have 2 matches left, and I feel like the crowd is also kind of dead right now, too.
- Rebel nailed Storm with the belt, but Storm was able to kick out. Referee ejects Rebel from ringside.
- A bloody Storm (from the nose) uses that distraction to fight back.
- Baker pops up in a surprise to interfere. Hayter still isn’t able to get the pin, though.
- The crowd woke up after all this interference. Near-falls was what this needed. Everyone is more interested in the possibility of Hayter winning the title rather than watching these two just go at it with the match itself.
- Hayter is able to get a pin after taking advantage of an exposed turnbuckle and is now your new interim champion.
AEW World Tag Team Championship Match
- Good rap from Max Caster, as per usual. No Billy Gunn coming out tonight.
- Also as per usual, the story of this match is revolving around Keith Lee and Swerve Strickland not being on the same page. They’ve never fully had the same vision, from the start.
- Caster hits a crossbody on Lee through a table.
- Swerve’s got some pliers. Billy Gunn runs out to stop him from injuring Caster’s fingers. Officials are busy with Gunn as Swerve hands the pliers to Lee. Unlike Fenix from earlier, Lee actually tosses the foreign object aside for real. This prompts Swerve to slap Lee. That won’t go well. Lee pulls up Bowens, gives him a pat on the back and walks away.
- Bowens takes the fight to Swerve and without having Lee by his side, it’s a 2-on-1. The Acclaimed retain the belts by pinfall.
It is announced there will be a Best of 7 Series between The Elite and Death Triangle over the coming weeks. Their match tonight was just the first. Starks against Page, Jericho against Ishii and Hager against Cassidy are all on the lineup for Dynamite on Wednesday.
AEW World Championship Match
- Tony Khan says this is going to be a tight show that will end at a reasonable time. Main event starts at 11:30pm. Even for a guy like me, who barely ever sleeps and is infinitely more of a night owl, I feel like that’s a bad definition of those terms for all those people who are struggling to stay awake right now.
- William Regal turning on Jon Moxley seems like such a viable direction for this match. I’m not saying it will happen, but I’m saying it definitely could.
- MJF has mostly wrestled a clean match, but did just spit something in Moxley’s face. That’s one sign toward him possibly abandoning that honor.
- MJF sets up a table, but it doesn’t get used yet.
- The crowd is so firmly pro-MJF and they’re playing into it massively. So much so that MJF is doing hulking-up moments. He’s got himself set up as the injured babyface, too, after a tombstone to the ring apron has him clutching his knee.
- Moxley piledrives MJF off the apron through the table! MJF just narrowly avoids being counted out. He walks right into a Paradigm Shift, but kicks out at two.
- Mox locks in a Figure 4. MJF struggles, but eventually reverses it. Full babyface.
- Avalanche Paradigm Shift off the top rope. Two-count when MJF’s finger reaches the ropes.
- MJF pulled the referee into Moxley’s path and then pulled out the Dynamite Diamond Ring. William Regal is back out to say “don’t you even think about it” and if he doesn’t put it down, Regal will smash his face with it. MJF throws it down and gets caught in a sleeper hold from Moxley. The new referee (Paul Turner) gets clipped by Moxley and taken out. Bryce Remsburg is stirring, but doesn’t see MJF tapping out.
- Then, suddenly, Regal slips bass knuckles to MJF! Remsburg doesn’t see MJF nail Moxley with the brass knuckles! MJF is your new champion!
