Author’s POV, Running Commentary & Thoughts:
Kickoff
- Heads up. I’m doing coverage for both this AND Double or Nothing at the same time. Therefore, I’ll have my attention split between them (and between both this site and Smark Out Moment). I might miss some details worth talking about.
- Maybe I’m wrong, but I think this might be the first time Megan Morant is hosting a panel. Good for her. She’s joined by Matt Camp and Sam Roberts.
- Oro Mensah still hasn’t given Noam Dar a “yes” for being his second in the NXT Heritage Cup match for later. But after Dar flew him out there on a first class ticket and set him up with a fancy hotel, Mensah says he’ll think about it. Dar nervously flips out in response.
NXT North American Championship Triple Threat Match: Wes Lee (c) vs. Joe Gacy vs. Tyler Bate
- No Dyad here for Schism. Just Ava accompanying Gacy to the ring.
- No “two people ganging up on the other until the communication breaks down” in this match. All three are against one another from the get-go.
- Gacy is booked as more of the power guy, naturally. He even powerbombs Bate and Lee into each other.
- Even competition among them, so far. No one is staying entirely in the lead.
- Lee retains with a pinfall on Gacy.
NXT Heritage Cup Championship Match: Noam Dar (c) vs. Dragon Lee
- Dragon Lee has Nathan Frazer as his second. Noam Dar has no one by his side.
- The first round is over with 0-0 and Oro Mensah has decided to come out to help Dar.
- Dar is able to score a pinfall for the second round.
- After the next round ends, Dar nails Lee with an elbow, risking a disqualification.
- Mensah helped push the rope toward Dar so he could break a Texas Cloverleaf. Frazer went over to confront him and Mensah got him from behind.
- Round 4 goes to Lee with a pinfall.
- Frazer and Mensah are now fighting.
- Jakara Jackson and Lash Legend ran in and helped Dar score the second pinfall to retain.
Last Man Standing Match: Dijak vs. Ilja Dragunov
- So far, we’ve seen things like Dijak tossing Dragunov onto the steps and Dragunov tackling Dijak through a table.
- Dragunov counters into a good DDT on top of the steps. No success for the win yet, but he is bleeding from his chin, so…
- Dragunov was able to go coast-to-coast and dropkick the steps into Dijak.
- Dijak hits Feast Your Eyes, but Dragunov falls back into the turnbuckle, leaning on the ropes instead of being down for a 10-count.
- Of course there are kendo sticks under the ring for Dijak to be able to grab. That’s pro wrestling for you.
- Dragunov eats some kendo stick shots to the point that it breaks. Dijak then grabs a steel chair. Dragunov slaps his way out of the corner, though, and regains control.
- Dijak is driven face-first into a steel chair from Dragunov jumping off the steel steps and ramming I think his elbow down into Dijak’s head. That’s your finish, with Dragunov coming out on top.
Duke Hudson says everyone did well in the latest test for Chase University, except one guy, who sucks. He’s brought Drew Gulak and Charlie Dempsey in for a guest lecture. Thea Hail gets upset and leaves. Duke gets mad at them and says they’d better have a better lesson planned for next week.
Dar, Mensah, Jackson and Legend are celebrating backstage celebrating. I couldn’t quite catch what they were saying (Double or Nothing going on simultaneously, remember?) but it seemed like a generic “I’m so happy I retained my title” bit.
NXT Great American Bash is going to be a premium live event on Sunday, July 30.
NXT Tag Team Championship Match: Gallus (c) vs. The Creed Brothers
- Between trying to update the Great American Bash announcement on multiple pages and watching the TNT Championship ladder match, this tag title match hasn’t had any of my attention, really.
- I wasn’t able to fully see everything going on, but it seems like it was a generic match with The Creed Brothers having some moments on top, until outside interference got in the way. Joe Coffey ringside was offset by Ivy Nile, but Ava Raine then got involved and caused enough of a distraction that Mark Coffey and Wolfgang were able to capitalize and retain.
- Straightforward stuff. I don’t think this necessarily had to be on the pay-per-view, rather than to maybe do something else like that Gigi Dolin vs. Jacy Jayne match.
NXT Women’s Championship Match: Lyra Valkyria vs. Tiffany Stratton
- Too many things to focus ooooooon at the same tiiiiiime. And this isn’t stealing my attention away by any means.
- Nothing at all going on that strikes me as must-see.
- AEW has a new women’s champion at the same time this match is going on.
- This has been going on longer than I anticipated. The crowd’s chanting “NXT” instead of chanting for Lyra Valkyria, so that’s interesting.
- Stratton hits her moonsault and she’s our new champion. The crowd seems happy for that.
NXT Championship Match: Carmelo Hayes (c) vs. Bron Breakker
- Solid enough generic match so far—another instance where nothing’s been stealing my full attention away from AEW, but they’ve had some good moves here and there.
- For instance, a hurricanrana from Breakker on the turnbuckle.
- Carmelo Hayes gets the victory with a pinfall. I missed that as I was too distracted with the TBS Championship situation on Double or Nothing.
