- Women’s Iron Survivor Challenge: Cora Jade vs. Indi Hartwell vs. Kiana James vs. Roxanne Perez vs. Zoey Stark — Roxanne Perez won with 2 points.
- Isla Dawn defeated Alba Fyre by pinfall.
- NXT Tag Team Championship Match: The New Day defeated Pretty Deadly (c) by pinfall to win the titles!!
- Men’s Iron Survivor Challenge: Axiom vs. Carmelo Hayes vs. Grayson Waller vs. JD McDonagh vs. Joe Gacy — Grayson Waller won with 3 points.
- NXT Championship Match: Bron Breakker (c) defeated Apollo Crews by pinfall.
Author’s POV, Running Commentary & Thoughts:
Kickoff Pre-Show
- Roxanne Perez drew the #1 spot in the Iron Survivor Challenge.
- Carmelo Hayes doesn’t reveal his spot. He’ll be out when his music hits.
- Backstage, Brooks Jensen had some flowers he wanted to give to Kiana James. She just insulted him and said he should wear a shirt that actually fits.
- Nothing else going on. Even though they said they would determine the order of the Iron Survivor Challenge matches, I guess they’re being literal here by technically “determining” them, but not “announcing” them, which kind of defeats the purpose.
Women’s Iron Survivor Challenge Match
- As said, Roxanne Perez is entry #1. Entry #2 is Zoey Stark.
- Kiana James is entry #3.
- Zoey Stark scores a pinfall on Roxanne, who must enter the penalty box.
- Entry #4 is Cora Jade.
- Jade gets a pin on James.
- Entry #5 is Indi Hartwell.
- Hartwell scores a pinfall point over Roxanne.
- Roxanne gets a point on Stark.
- Perez takes the lead with another pinfall.
- With a 2-point score, Roxanne wins the match. Kiana James was the only one not to score a point.
Ivy Nile and Tatum Paxley are interviewed by McKenzie Mitchell. Paxley says Nile’s heart is as big as her muscles. Katana Chance and Kayden Carter interrupted to say Nile did the right thing, looking out for The Creed Brothers. Nile says she appreciates them saying it, but they shouldn’t mistake her kindness for weakness (ie, what Veer and Sanga just talked about recently). Chance and Carter are growing to respect them.
Singles Match: Alba Fyre vs. Isla Dawn
- I maintain this match didn’t need to be on the card, but should have just been on television. Let’s see if they prove me wrong and the action ends up being worthwhile.
- So far, it’s been fine, but nothing must-see by any means.
- Dawn messes around with the referee and when Fyre goes for a pinfall, the referee is then choking and seizing with some black stuff around his mouth.
- As other referees check on Felix Fernandez, Dawn shoves Fyre into an exposed turnbuckle. She’s able to capitalize on that for the win.
- I dig the end of this and the way they’re making Dawn’s witchcraft stuff part of the match now. Thumbs up.
NXT Tag Team Championship Match: Pretty Deadly vs. The New Day
- For some reason, Booker T is super anti-New Day tonight on commentary.
- I’m rooting for The New Day here. What about you?
- Fans start chanting “we want sideplates.”
- Kofi Kingston and Elton Prince are having a twerk-off.
- This is a very well balanced match. The New Day are showing off how they’re veterans, but they aren’t just squashing Pretty Deadly. Prince and Kit Wilson are getting in their shots and having time on top just the same.
- Xavier Woods is so good. Constantly overlooked and underrated.
- Pretty Deadly tries the Eddie Guerrero fake title hit spot, only for Woods to toss it back, leading to everyone tossing it around in hot potato fashion and laying down to pretend they’ve been hit.
- Eventually, the referee is distracted and Pretty Deadly takes advantage. But Woods kicks out!
- The New Day are your new champions!!! I loved this.
An advertisement is aired for “countdown to the new year” on January 10th. Who wants to tell WWE that a countdown to something that’s already passed by makes no sense?
Backstage, Carter and Chance bumped into Malik Blade and Edris Enofe to talk about partying, before Gigi Dolin and Jacy Jayne interrupted. Toxic Attraction complained about Carter and Chance giving a title shot to Nile and Paxley, saying they only want to fight teams they know they can beat. Nile and Paxley then popped up to attack Dolin and Jayne. Officials stepped in to break up the brawl.
Men’s Iron Survivor Challenge Match
- Entry #1 is JD McDonagh. Second-up is Axiom.
- Entry #3 is Carmelo Hayes.
- Hayes scores a pinfall point on Axiom.
- Grayson Waller is next up and scores two quick pins on Axiom and McDonagh.
- Axiom scores a fall on Waller, then McDonagh, to even it up.
- Joe Gacy is now out to finish the list.
- Gacy gets a point over Axiom, who gets attacked by McDonagh and Waller before he can even get into the penalty box.
- Hayes gets pinned by Gacy to make this 2 for Axiom, 2 for Gacy, 2 for Waller, 1 for Hayes and 0 for McDonagh.
- Waller taps out, giving Hayes his second point.
- Lots of crazy scrambling going on, particularly with McDonagh looking for his first point. But he’s not able to get the job done. This is frenetic and fun.
- McDonagh eats a quadruple superkick!
- Waller steals a pin on Axiom away from Hayes to take the lead. He manages to stall enough to win after that.
NXT New Year’s Evil is happening on January 10th, not January 3rd. We can assume they’re pre-taping for January 3rd and that’s why. Still strange, though.
Drew Gulak explained why he was checking out Charlie Dempsey’s match last Tuesday. Since he’s yet to accomplish what he wants, he is ready to grind and thinks being in NXT will help him going forward. He wants to give back while also getting something out of the people he goes up against. Damon Kemp interrupts the interview to say Gulak should pay attention to his match on Tuesday.
NXT Championship Match
- As was talked about beforehand, this is a very even match. Power meets power. Speed meets speed. The similarities are being pinpointed and they’re doing a great job making it seem like they’re equals.
- Breakker kicks out of three German suplexes. Then, out of three powerbombs.
- Lots of power moves and reversals going on. Breakker’s bulldog from the top, Crews reversing Breakker’s powerslam into a DDT, Breakker getting a chokeslam. Crews even gets a powerslam of his own for a two.
- “This is awesome” chant from the crowd breaks out.
- Breakker gets the win with a spear.
- After the match, Waller laid out Breakker to end the show and pose with the belt.
