Quick Hits Results:
- Six-Man Tag Team Good Old Fashioned Donnybrook Match: The Brawling Brutes defeated Imperium by pinfall.
- SmackDown Women’s Championship Extreme Rules Match: Ronda Rousey defeated Liv Morgan (c) by submission to win the title.
- Strap Match: Karrion Kross defeated Drew McIntyre by pinfall.
- Raw Women’s Championship Ladder Match: Bianca Belair (c) defeated Bayley
- I Quit Match: Finn Balor defeated Edge
- Fight Pit Match: Matt Riddle defeated Seth Rollins by submission.
Author’s POV, Running Commentary & Thoughts:
Kickoff
- Nothing at all has indicated extra matches being added to this card, despite how only two belts are on the line and feuds like Dexter Lumis vs. The Miz are absent. I don’t understand the approach to making this such a “that’s good enough” show.
- The pre-show panel of Kevin Patrick, Jerry “The King” Lawler, Booker T and Peter Rosenberg are chattering about the standard stuff. Nothing of note to address.
- Kevin Patrick claims this is the first strap match since 2013. Really? I feel like we just had one in the past 2 years or so.
- This is ending with a promo for Bobby Lashley, who isn’t on the card? Huh?
Good Old Fashioned Donnybrook Six-Man Tag Team Match
- I like that they’ve set up props ringside that are very old school Irish bar vibes. Barrels and such. Nice touch.
- Painful looking Cloverleaf from Sheamus on Gunther. Gunther only escapes when Ludwig Kaiser breaks a shillelagh over The Celtic Warrior’s back. This prompts the crowd to start their “this is awesome” chant.
- Boo / yeah / boo / yeah time with Sheamus and Gunther smacking each other. This crowd is eating it up.
- Of course, “we want tables” chants break out. How about a bunch of shillelaghs instead? Or, Sheamus can powerbomb Gunther through the commentary table with a Celtic Cross.
- Brawling Brutes get the win when Sheamus takes out Giovanni Vinci with a Brogue Kick.
Backstage, The Miz is interviewed by Megan Morant. The Miz hypes Monday Night Raw and gets distracted by Gritty (Philadelphia Flyers mascot) who hands him a shirt, but he throws it down and stomps on it.
Extreme Rules Match for the SmackDown Women’s Championship
- How long before Liv Morgan taps out? I’m thinking less than 4 minutes.
- Morgan’s decked out in purple and green ring gear that looks neat. She brought a bat to the ring and immediately tossed it aside where Ronda could have grabbed it at any moment, though. That’s not logical. And then, once the bell rang, she went straight to trying to grab it. Why not just hold it?
- The crowd’s definitely behind Morgan and not supporting Rousey.
- Rousey throws her gi in the face of Morgan, who has to pretend for like 10 seconds that she doesn’t know how to take it off so that Rousey can grab a weapon of her own. That was bad.
- Wooooooof. Even worse is when they have a chair wedged between the top and middle turnbuckle, ready for a spot, but it falls down. Morgan and Rousey then botch the “send Rousey into the corner” maneuver, try it a second time and there’s no chair there. Yeeeesh that was bad.
- Crowd got their wish for another table spot with Morgan crashing through Rousey for a two-count.
- Morgan passes out, instead of tapping. Rousey’s champion again. The fans are not loving this whatsoever.
Strap Match
- Kross opted not to be strapped in and went after McIntyre, leading to a brawl for a bit. Eventually, they got strapped together and the match is officially underway.
- The story being told here is definitely McIntyre’s bad shoulder.
- Pretty standard match going on. It’s fine, but it’s not all that special. Nothing really to talk about.
- Obligatory moment where Scarlet interrupts McIntyre’s attempt for a Claymore. However, she then pepper sprays McIntyre. I didn’t see that one coming. Kross hits his finisher for the win.
Ladder Match for the Raw Women’s Championship
- Bianca Belair is so good. She manages to find ways to make the extra flair she puts on her moves look like it serves more of a purpose than most Superstars, who will do a flip and then stop and do another move, rather than flow simultaneously. She’s definitely going down as a top Hall of Famer.
- A few minutes into the match, no members of Damage CTRL or any of Belair’s allies popping up yet. I’m sure that will change eventually.
- I’m not sure if Bayley intended to kick the support structures off the ladder, but she did it anyway. That ladder’s definitely out of commission.
- What’s up with that random cut to the bored woman in the crowd?
- Bayley takes the hinge off her knee brace, ready to use that as a weapon. Belair dodges and hits a KOD.
- As she climbs a ladder, Dakota Kai and Iyo Sky rush the ring and pull her down. Commentary is reminding everyone that Alexa Bliss and Asuka aren’t going to back her up (but why not Raquel Rodriguez and Shotzi?). Belair hits a double-KOD on Sky and Kai by herself anyway.
- Bayley’s able to hit a Rose Plant to lay out Belair, before dragging the champion underneath a ladder to try to trap her. Belair manages to lift the ladder and send Bayley into the ropes.
- They both race to the top, but Bayley pulls Bianca’s braid to take her down. Belair uses the braid as a whip to take Bayley off the ladder in her own right.
- Belair hits a KOD on Bayley who was holding a ladder, ONTO the ladder. Nice move to secure the win.
I Quit Match
- WTF is Finn Balor wearing on his head? Is he made out of those things you find at Spencer’s that you put your hand in and it makes the impression? Did he just see Hellraiser for the first time? Or is he planning on using his head to scrub dishes? My wife says it resembles a mask in the trailer for the next season of American Horror Story.
- The new theme is….meh.
- Take a drink for every “Ask him” / “No.” we get in this match.
- Edge has a hockey stick. Well, he is Canadian, after all.
- Rhea Ripley handcuffs Edge to the ring ropes.
- Rey Mysterio comes out to help, but gets taken out by Dominik.
- Beth Phoenix to the rescue! She’s totally going to be the reason Balor wins.
- The crowd’s loving Phoenix against Ripley. We definitely need to see that down the line.
- Eventually, Ripley hits Phoenix with brass knuckles and when they threaten to give her a con-chair-to, Edge quits and they go ahead and do it anyway. Good ending.
For the third time in the night, Gritty and The Miz get into it. The Miz finally attacks Gritty and lays him out, only for Dexter Lumis to pop up behind him and choke him out, placing him right next to Gritty, before helping Gritty out. Gritty then kicks The Miz and walks off with Lumis.
Fight Pit Match
- Did you know that Daniel Cormier didn’t beat Jon Jones, but Matt Riddle beat Jones twice? Jimmy Smith knows.
- I say it every time and I’ll repeat myself once more. Whenever the heart beat sound goes on while the cage is lowering, that puts a smile on my face. It makes it seem epic.
- Is the lighting different, or just a reflection?
- Solid match so far, though it feels like a regular steel cage match rather than a Fight Pit in the same sense we had with Riddle against Timothy Thatcher, for instance.
- OH DAMN. Riddle’s fall off the top of the Fight Pit catwalk onto Rollins sounded HARSH for both. I would be shocked if neither of them is injured.
- Rollins taps out to give Riddle the win.
- Let’s see what this White Rabbit thing is all about, as that will likely close the show.
The lights are out and Michael Cole is asking if they’re still on the air. All the fireflies light up their phones as “He’s got the whole world in his hands” starts playing. A few people in the crowd are given a spotlight, dressed up as Huskus the Pig Boy, Mercy the Buzzard, Rambling Rabbit, and Abbey the Witch are shown. The Fiend is shown, too. All the Firefly Fun House puppets are shown covered in cobwebs and such. A masked person pops up on the screen and mumbles something I couldn’t decipher. Finally, Bray Wyatt comes out, making his return holding a blue lantern to a “holy shit” chant. He blows out the candle and a new logo pops up on the screen resembling the Silence of the Lambs iconography. That’s your pay-per-view.
