Author’s POV, Running Commentary & Thoughts:
Kickoff and United States Championship Match
- Kayla Braxton replacing Charly Caruso is certainly not a good sign for Charly sticking around in WWE.
- WWE is far too chaotic these days. Even with the Braun Strowman match, it was announced, pulled from the website, announced as still happening, and now, they’re running an angle that will pull it. This bait and switch “change things on the fly and it’ll keep things interesting” philosophy is toxic, doesn’t work and is only frustrating, rather than beneficial. I don’t think anyone reads a situation like that as a positive. Am I wrong? Are you more interested in the events going forward because of that switch-around? Let me know.
- Something has to happen with this US title match. Either Ali wins the title or RETRIBUTION dissolves, I’m assuming. I’m leaning more toward the latter.
- There goes the latter. RETRIBUTION has abandoned Mustafa Ali. That doesn’t necessarily mean the group has disbanded entirely, because they could just be kicking Ali out. However, I’d imagine this is where everyone goes their separate ways. I’m hoping that’s the case. Mia Yim, in particular, needs to just be Mia Yim, and Dominik Dijakovic should revert back to his old name and persona, too.
Women’s Tag Team Championship Match
- Please do something to make me interested. We just saw this at Elimination Chamber, so I’m not hyped for it, no matter how good some of these women are. It just screams “waste of time” and my brain keeps telling me not to bother looking at my screen.
- Nope. No reason to watch. It was exactly what everyone knew it would be, which was a generic match until Banks and Belair argued and then lost again.
- At least their ring gear matched, right?
Shane McMahon was backstage, talking to Elias and Jaxson Ryker, looking like he’s about to announce he’s not medically cleared to compete tonight.
Intercontinental Championship Match
- I’m glad they started off with some fire.
- Speaking of ring gear, I really dig Apollo’s new stuff.
- Wait…that was the end of the match? Was that a botch, or just poor creative? This match wasn’t even fully gearing up and it ends with that weird pin? Ugh. This event is gearing up to be one of those “worst of the year” candidates…
Rik Bugez, dressed up as “Joseph Average” and selling some Old Spice, ended up pinning R-Truth to win the 24/7 Championship. Then, he immediately lost it back to R-Truth.
Braun Strowman vs. Elias
- Shane McMahon told Elias he’ll be replacing him in his match against Braun Strowman.
- How long before Elias loses and Shane attacks Braun and says “Ha ha! You’re so stupid! You fell for it! I’m not really injured!” I’m thinking less than five minutes from when I’m typing this.
- Another complete waste of time. They didn’t even do anything with McMahon after the match! This would have been something not worthy of a highlight reel on an episode of Raw, let alone the show before WrestleMania.
Riddle pitched Shinsuke Nakamura the idea of tricking out his scooter.
Seth Rollins vs. Shinsuke Nakamura
- Please do something to save this event. Somehow, I don’t think that’s going to happen at this point, even though these two could theoretically have a great match.
- I liked Nakamura’s attempt to hook the leg in an odd way for one of his pins. That was neat.
- This was the best match so far. Then again, that’s not saying much, given what preceded it.
No Holds Barred Match: Drew McIntyre vs. Sheamus
- McIntyre has some Braveheart face paint on. I would have thought something like that would have been saved for WrestleMania.
- Rats. So far, I’m not feeling this as much as I was hoping. By this point, I wanted a really impactful and brutal match, but this is mostly just punching around the ThunderDome.
- Most of the time, when WWE does the fake electric spark pyro, it comes off bad. I didn’t mind this one, with the ThunderDome screens. It’s more believable as a smaller set of sparks that isn’t made to be a bigger deal than what it was. If that had been the end of the match, it would have been underwhelming.
- Ouch. You’ll never catch me doing or taking a suplex on the concrete. Or anywhere, for that matter.
- Nice White Noise through the table. Simple, but effective.
- Why is a piece of the commentary table being used as a big weapon when it looks like it has the tensile strength of cardboard?
- Weak finish to a match that was meh and nowhere near as good as it could have been or should have been.
- Was that selling by McIntyre, struggling to pose on the ropes, or is he actually injured? That’s the last thing WWE needs right now.
Alexa Bliss vs. Randy Orton
- We’re just doing the black goop thing again? Please don’t tell me that’s all WWE has planned for this (and the obligatory Fiend return).
- Credit where it’s due, the fire effect blocking Orton from charging Bliss was neat.
- Another point for Bliss saying “be careful, Randy, the sky is falling” after the lighting rig fell.
- “I don’t think Alexa Bliss got all of that…fireball?” – HA.
- Since I keep mentioning ring gear and outfits, I think The Fiend’s charred attire looks good.
- Look. I’m not a huge fan of this for many reasons. I’ve stated that a lot. But I’m always trying to be fair, and I’ll fully admit this segment was more entertaining than I thought it would be. It doesn’t mean I think this is a good feud, or that I want them to fight at WrestleMania, or that I enjoyed anything that came before it. All it means is this was better than I expected and that I have no problem saying I was wrong about this particular segment.
Universal Championship Match
- Wow me. Come on. This is already on my list for the worst event of the year and I don’t want to end things on another down note.
- I like Bryan playing up his speed and technical skills in comparison to Reigns as the powerhouse. Proper booking.
- I’m also a fan of Reigns doing more submission maneuvers as of late.
- They’re doing enough that they’re making it seem like Bryan has a chance. Thumbs up. This is good.
- At some point, Bryan is going to hit Edge with a Knee Plus or something. Guaranteed.
- To be honest, I’m disappointed Jey Uso got involved. I don’t think that was entirely necessary.
- Okay, maybe Bryan hits Edge with the chair, instead.
- Hm. That chair shot wasn’t so great. But it’ll do its purpose and set Edge up to cost Bryan the match.
- I’m surprised Reigns is tapping, even though it doesn’t officially count.
- There goes Edge with the interference. I’m not knocking it for being predictable, by the way. Sometimes, predictable and logical is the right way to go and I’d rather WWE do that than to do something wacky just for the sake of unpredictability.
- I’m cool with this, but I’m both interested and worried how WWE will follow it up.
