“Then. Now. Forever.” The WWE video leads us into the show.
We immediately go into the arena to hear the music of Seth Rollins. As Rollins makes his way to the ring, they advertise his WWE Battleground match for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship against champion Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns. Rollins says in four weeks at Battleground, everyone will get the match they’ve wanted: all three former members of The Shield in a triple threat match. Rollins pauses for a moment and says it’s time to talk about Roman Reigns, even though he’s not supposed to. People boo the mention of his name. Rollins says the Reigns scandal embarrassed him. As the architect of The Shield, he brought Reigns into the fold. Reigns’ embarrassment is a stain on Rollins’ reputation. Rollins then reads Reigns’ tweet out loud: “I apologize to my family, friends and fans for my mistake in violating the WWE’s wellness policy. No excuses. I own it.” Rollins criticizes the tweet. Back when they were in The Shield, Reigns didn’t care what the fans thought and didn’t have any friends. As for Reigns owning it, he is owning up after the fact. Rollins says Reigns can own it all he wants, but the bottom line is he owns Reigns. He owned Reigns last year at WrestleMania, and he owned him at Money in the Bank when he beat him for the WWE Championship. Rollins says Reigns doesn’t deserve a second chance or forgiveness. Most of all, Reigns doesn’t deserve to be in the main event of Battleground. The right thing to do is take Reigns out of the match and give him the one-on-one match against Dean Ambrose for the WWE Title that he rightfully deserves. The crowd is mostly receptive to this idea.
Dean Ambrose’s music hits, and the WWE Champion makes his way to the ring. The company seems to no longer be referring to it as the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. Ambrose gets a nice reception as he gets into the ring. Ambrose stalls for a bit and taunts Rollins. Ambrose says Rollins looks worked up and jerky. Is this really about Reigns or is it about him having the title? Ambrose says Reigns made a mistake. Everyone makes mistakes. Ambrose used to be friends with Rollins, so he made a huge mistake. Rollins wears skinny jeans, which is a huge mistake.Ambrose says Reigns made a mistake and owned it. Unless he has New Day’s time machine, there’s nothing that can be done about it. In his mind, the triple threat match is still on.
AJ Styles’ music hits, and he comes out to a huge reception. The crowd chants “AJ Styles.” Styles says Rollins should listen to Ambrose because Battleground should have a triple threat match… only with him in the match. The crowd does a “YES” chant. Styles says he’s the guy that beat John Cena in a dream match. Take out Reigns and put him in the match and all will be right with the world. Ambrose says he doesn’t make the decisions around here, but Reigns is still in the match. Styles requests to be put in because he deserves it. It should be a Fatal Four-Way match. Ambrose says he doesn’t care because he’ll whoop them all. Rollins says this needs to be a one-on-one match.
John Cena’s music hits, and the face that runs this place makes his way to the ring to a huge reception before the crowd begins to split on him. Cena says Dean Ambrose is a fighting champion. Ambrose will fight a friend, a foe, and a fraud. Will he fight the franchise? Maybe there’s a mixed opinion, but he’s held the title fifteen times. Fourteen years ago today he had his first WWE match, so this is his WWE birthday. If you’re really checking your facts, for the last twelve years he’s lived in Tampa. This gets a big reception. The most important thing is the last time he faced Dean Ambrose with a championship on the line, Cena won. The look on Ambrose’s face says time’s are changing, so he can prove it. At Battleground, it should be a Fatal Five-Way!
Stephanie McMahon’s music hits, and she comes out to barely any reception. She says she has a solution to their problem, but before she does, she wants to commiserate with Rollins. What happened with Reigns is an embarrassment, but even worse is the fact that standing in the ring as WWE Champion is Dean Ambrose. Ambrose defiantly holds up the title. She says she’s mortified. How can we reconcile this? She’d ask her brother Shane McMahon, but he’s not here again. She’ll have to take matters into her own hands, but she’s ok with that. She likes the idea of Styles and Cena joining the match, but an opportunity like that must be earned. Therefore tonight, Seth Rollins will go one-on-one against John Cena. As for AJ Styles, he’ll go one-on-one against the champion Dean Ambrose. If they both win their matches, they’ll be added to the WWE Championship match at Battleground. She wishes everyone but Ambrose luck. Her music hits, and she walks off.
Coming up tonight, we’ll see the return of The Highlight Reel with special guests Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens. Coming up next, we’ll see Charlotte and Dana Brooke take on Paige and Sasha Banks.
Paige and Sasha Banks vs. Charlotte and Dana Brooke
Charlotte will start that match against Sasha Banks. Sasha talks a little trash before running over to Dana Brooke and tagging her in. Dana comes into the ring and faces off against Sasha. Sasha bounces her in the corner and chokes boots her in the face a few times. Dana quickly pulls her into the turnbuckle and talks trash until Sasha slaps her. Paige is tagged in, and they send Dana into the ropes for a double hip toss. Charlotte runs in, and she eats a double dropkick. Charlotte and Dana regroup at ringside as we go to commercial.
We come back from the break to see Dana choking Paige on the ropes. Charlotte is tagged in, and they execute a double-team suplex for a two count. During the commercial, Charlotte blindsided Paige on the apron. Charlotte tags Dana back in, and she does a handstand choke in the corner. Charlotte tags back in, and she hits a snapmare before applying a chin lock. Paige fights out, but Charlotte kicks her before connecting with a flipping neckbreaker. Charlotte knocks Sasha off the apron and lets Dana choke Paige as the referee is distracted. Charlotte blocks Paige from making a tag and powers her to the corner. Paige fights out and takes out both Charlotte and Dana. Charlotte stops her from making a tag, but Paige superkicks her.
