Author’s POV, Running Commentary & Thoughts:

Kickoff

  • Booker T touts himself as getting a Road Warrior pop from ’87 when he made his surprise Royal Rumble entrance. Everyone (Booker himself, too) got a big laugh out of that.
  • Notice how they carefully word things to avoid saying not only that Chris Benoit is also someone who won from the #1 spot, but also that they bypass Daniel Bryan’s endurance record and Braun Strowman being tied with Brock Lesnar for the most eliminations in a match?
  • Booker’s in a mood tonight. I love it. He’s picking fights, making jokes and having a lot of fun.
  • I dig the Bobby Lashley vignette. It makes the match feel even bigger.
  • Damian Priest says the other competitors have to decide if they want to wake up the Damian side of him. Look. It’s not the best of the gimmicks in the world by all accounts, but it’s something, and I’m glad they had a little pre-match quick promo like that. I was hoping for more of these throughout the kickoff.
  • Speaking of something I want in the kickoff, I say this every year, and I’ll keep saying it. I WANT THE TUMBLER. Show me at least one person picking their number from the golden cage! Do it!!!!
  • No tumbler yet. Booooo.
  • There’s a sign in the crowd that says “send nudes” haha!

Universal Championship Match

  • Roman out first? Well, now I’m second-guessing my pick that Rollins wins this and Reigns wins the Royal Rumble.
  • Oh damn, Rollins comes out with The Shield music, ring gear and through the crowd?! I looooooove it.
  • And we’ve gotten a one-man Shield powerbomb through the commentary table.
  • I’m so glad this event has a crowd. That’s going to make such a big difference. This audience is pumped, too.
  • A spear gets countered into a Pedigree from Rollins? Nice! This is like a “best of” for Rollins, playing the hits from the past.
  • Charles Robinson kind of dropping Seth’s arm on the ropes for the break was a smooth move.
  • Wait…a disqualification? Really? Oh no. Is this going to be one of those nights where WWE has every possible way to succeed and manages to book things so weird that it all gets ruined?
  • Roman beats Seth down with a chair after the match. Is this maybe just a means to have a rematch at Elimination Chamber and drag this out a few more weeks? If so, I’m REALLY curious how they get to Reigns vs. Lesnar if nothing at all happens here and they’ll have already had both the Royal Rumble and Elimination Chamber matches taken out of the equation.
  • Time to wait until at least the end of this show to really judge this, but I’m nervous.

30-Woman Royal Rumble

  • Entry #1 is Sasha Banks, followed by Melina.
  • Melina’s already gone in just a few seconds!! Banks then does the split pose to taunt her.
  • #3 is Tamina.
  • #4 is Kelly Kelly.
  • Oof. Kelly Kelly isn’t off to a good start with that terrible hurricanrana spin and all.
  • Kelly Kelly’s out via Banks.
  • #5 is Aliyah.
  • #6 is Liv Morgan.
  • #7 is Queen Zelina Vega.
  • Sasha Banks is out via Vega. The crowd’s not liking that one bit.
  • #8 is Bianca Belair.
  • I like Aliyah doing kicks in the corner to the countdown. Nice touch that I’m sure most people won’t even notice.
  • #9 is Dana Brooke, who comes out with Reggie.
  • #10 is Michelle McCool.
  • Dana Brooke is saved from elimination when Reggie catches her. Far from the best of those saves we’ve seen, but still something. I’m sure she’ll be gone in a second. Aaaand there she goes.
  • #11 is Sonya Deville, who keeps her jacket on and joins the commentary team instead of entering the ring.
  • #12 is Natalya.
  • Tamina is eliminated by Natalya.
  • #13 is Cameron
  • Cameron is eliminated by Sonya Deville, who purposely went out of her way to enter the ring to take out Naomi’s friend.
  • #14 is Naomi.
  • Naomi takes out Sonya Deville.
  • #15 is Carmella, who doesn’t enter. She just hangs by Corey Graves.
  • #16 is Rhea Ripley. Cue some eliminations, right?
  • Ripley brings Carmella into the ring, but gets ganged up on. Then, she tosses out both Carmella and Vega.
  • #17 is Charlotte Flair. Oh no. She’s poison to Ripley.
  • Aliyah is eliminated by Charlotte Flair.
  • Naomi catches herself from an elimination, but Sonya Deville pulls her off the apron to be eliminated.
  • #18 is Ivory in Right to Censor mode!
  • Ivory talks about how there are nothing but girls in the ring more worried about their social media followers than taking care of their families. Ripley casually picks her up, puts her over the rope, then knocks her out and eliminates her.
  • #19 is Brie Bella, who does the yes chants.
  • #20 is Mickie James, who is indeed wearing her title belt and to the Hardcore Country theme!
  • Michelle McCool is eliminated by Mickie James, but it kind of looks like it might have been a botch.
  • #21 is Alicia Fox!
  • #22 is Nikki A.S.H.
  • #23 is Summer Rae, who is fired up and goes straight to Nattie.
  • Summer Rae is eliminated by Natalya.
  • #24 is Nikki Bella
  • Team Bella reforms for a brief moment until Alicia Fox is eliminated by Nikki Bella.
  • #25 is Sarah Logan
  • Logan is eliminated by The Bella Twins.
  • Liv Morgan is eliminated by Brie Bella.
  • #26 is Lita
  • Mickie James is out via Lita.
  • #27 is Mighty Molly, who gets jumped by Nikki A.S.H. before she even hits the ring.
  • Mighty Molly is eliminated by Nikki A.S.H. – great call.
  • #28 is Ronda Rousey!
  • Nikki A.S.H. is eliminated by Ronda Rousey.
  • Nikki Bella is eliminated by Brie Bella.
  • #29 is Shotzi
  • Brie Bella is eliminated by Ronda Rousey.
  • #30 is Shayna Baszler
  • Shotzi is eliminated by Ronda Rousey.
  • Natalya is eliminated by Bianca Belair.
  • Lita is eliminated by Charlotte Flair.
  • Rhea Ripley is eliminated by Charlotte Flair (of course).
  • Shayna Baszler and Bianca Belair are eliminated by Charlotte Flair.
  • Down to Flair and Rousey.
  • Charlotte Flair is eliminated by Ronda Rousey., who will go on to WrestleMania.
  • You’ll hear my opinions about it for the next few months, but my initial reaction is that I get it, but I don’t have any interest in Rousey having yet another match with Flair or Lynch at WrestleMania, since I’ve seen it before. That’s especially true if we get other rematches like Lesnar vs Reigns.

Raw Women’s Championship Match

  • As expected, the crowd is pretty dead for this. It’s in a spot that they knew people would be tired and need a breather, to run to the bathroom, get some food, etc.
  • The match itself hasn’t been anything worth writing home about, either, to be fair.
  • I’ve got nothing to say, really.
  • Apparently, the WrestleMania sign has started melting and dripping down onto the people in the crowd. Yikes!!
  • Manhandle Slam from the ropes gets the win for Becky Lynch. I’m still curious why they went in this direction with Doudrop and Seth Rollins instead of a babyface challenger for those two champions, but hey, whatever.

WWE Championship Match

  • This match starts off with some feats of strength and suplexes.
  • Honestly, this isn’t as intense as I was hoping it would be. I’m disappointed.
  • Uh oh. Referee is down. So pretty much they went with the opposite direction of what I thought, where instead of Rollins winning the title because Lesnar interfered, it’s going to be Lashley beating Brock because Reigns interfered.
  • Paul Heyman handed the WWE Championship to Roman Reigns. We’re just saying “gotcha” and undoing the whole past month, in a sense. Reigns strikes Lesnar and that’s going to be it.
  • Lashley scores the pinfall and wins the belt. Paul Heyman leaves with Reigns.

Mixed Tag Team Match

  • I think we’re all expecting this to be the worst match of the card.
  • So far, it’s lived up to its potential, basically. There isn’t much to it other than the heels playing heel and all the gaga without an actual quality match.
  • At some point, Beth is going to humiliate The Miz. Guaranteed.
  • Fast forward a few minutes from me typing that and Beth is stomping Miz in the corner.
  • Maryse nails Beth with the purse+brick combo again, but Beth kicks out twice. The crowd doesn’t pop the way they were supposed to.
  • Maryse broke a nail. The horror. But she does her pose, which is the opposite of horror.
  • Surprised by the hurricanrana from the top rope by Maryse.
  • Edge kicks out of a Skull Crushing Finale.
  • Double spear from Edge and Beth after Miz and Maryse tried to do a double SCF.
  • Double Glam Slam for the win.

I’m a big Sasha Banks fan, but why are we getting a vignette hyping her up right now? She’s already wrestled tonight and lost fairly early.

30-Man Royal Rumble

  • #1 is AJ Styles
  • #2 is Shinsuke Nakamura

  • #14 is Dominik Mysterio
  • Omos is eliminated by AJ Styles, Austin Theory, Chad Gable, Dominik Mysterio, Ricochet and Ridge Holland
  • #15 is Happy Corbin
  • Ricochet is eliminated by Happy Corbin (and is getting checked on, it seems)
  • #16 is Dolph Ziggler
  • Dominik Mysterio is eliminated by Happy Corbin.

  • #20 is Riddle
  • Rick Boogs is eliminated by Happy Corbin
  • #21 is Drew McIntyre
  • Madcap Moss is eliminated by Drew McIntyre
  • Happy Corbin is eliminated by Drew McIntyre. McIntyre then continued to wail on those two on the outside, using the steel steps as his weapon of choice.
  • #22 is Kevin Owens
  • For some reason, Owens and McIntyre are fighting during his entrance, but they both go back into the ring.
  • #23 is Rey Mysterio
  • #24 is Kofi Kingston
  • Kofi Kingston is eliminated by Kevin Owens as he botches his attempt to save himself!!!! Both his feet hit the floor!!! Woooooow! That was such a downer moment.
  • #25 is Otis

  • #27 is Bad Bunny
  • Sheamus is eliminated by Bad Bunny
  • Dolph Ziggler is eliminated by Bad Bunny

  • Big E is eliminated by Randy Orton and Riddle
  • Otis is eliminated by Randy Orton and Riddle
  • #30 is Brock Lesnar. We might as well just say that he won, right?
  • Randy Orton is eliminated by Brock Lesnar (crowd boos).
  • Bad Bunny is eliminated by Brock Lesnar.
  • Riddle is eliminated by Brock Lesnar.
  • Shane McMahon is eliminated by Brock Lesnar.
  • Drew McIntyre is eliminated by Brock Lesnar.
  • Well, it seems this match was pretty much a one-shot deal that everyone could see coming from a mile away after earlier events. Kind of a dud and certainly not the buzz WWE would have hoped for.
