Welcome to SmackDown Live. Show opens up and Smackdown Commissioner Shane McMahon comes out to the ring. He starts talking about how close Team Blue came to victory on Sunday. He says that his sister Stephanie McMahon will try to spin this situation her way but Smackdown, even in defeat, it is much more than a ‘B’ show. The Smackdown superstars bleed blue and they leave it all out there in the ring. Except, of course, for two individuals: Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn. Shane has asked these two to come out to the ring right now. Owens’ music hits and they make their entrance. They have smug smiles on their faces as they come to stand before Shane.
Owens asks Shane which version of him are they dealing with? The death-defying nutcase or the drunk-with-power commissioner? Sami asks Shane if it gets hard to come up with so many excuses for failure all the time. Owens then demands an apology for being left off Survivor Series. Owens says that they would have beat The Shield, or Braun Strowman, Triple H, whoever… Even Brock Lesnar. Owens tells Shane to be a man and just say he’s sorry. Shane responds and says, as to their first question, they are speaking to the commissioner. Then he tells them to shut their mouths and listen.
Shane tells them that they don’t have respect for him, for the brand, or for any of these fans. Sami answers in the affirmative on all counts. Shane says that reaction makes what he has to say a lot easier… But Owens cuts in and says that Shane can’t continue with that line of thought because he knows he needs them. They warn him not to do anything foolish because he knows he’d be better served keeping the two best stars in WWE close at hand. Shane tells them that they are delusional and it is going to feel really good to say the two words he has to say. He tells them they are two of the craziest megalomaniacs to ever step foot in a WWE ring.
And with that, Shane begins to utter, “You’re f…!” and Smackdown General Manager Daniel Bryan’s music suddenly interrupts. Bryan comes out to the ring and tells Shane he has every right to fire these two but he thinks he has a better temporary solution than terminating their contracts tonight. Bryan agrees that everyone in the back hates these guys. Randy Orton took a night off because he said he couldn’t be held responsible for his actions if he ran into Owens and Sami tonight. The New Day are also furious and want a piece of them. So Bryan proposes that they have a match with New Day tonight.
Sami says that makes no sense because New Day has three members, but then Bryan interjects, telling Sami to shut up. Bryan continues and say that because the whole locker room hates them, they will all surround the ring during the match. Owens & Sami will face New Day in a Lumberjack Match.
Singles Match: Shelton Benjamin vs. Jey Uso
Back from commercial and Benjamin has Jey in a rear chin-lock. Jey stands up and rocks Benjamin with an uppercut. Benjamin goes for a belly-to-back suplex but Jey back flips and lands on his feet. Benjamin makes a move and Jey hits him with a Samoan Drop. Benjamin crawls to the corner and Jey butt splashes him. Benjamin rolls out of the ring and Jey is about to go for a suicide dive. Chad Gable jumps up on the apron to block him. Jimmy Uso comes around and Gable lays him out with a shot.
Benjamin tries to roll up Jey but Jey kicks out. They move through some transitions until Jey attempts a splash off the top rope. Benjamin moves out of the way and then catches Jey with Paydirt for the pinfall.
Winner: Shelton Benjamin
Benjamin & Gable signal that they are coming for the tag titles next.
Owens & Sami are backstage trying to gain the favor of some of the lumberjacks in their match and have little success in doing so.
Naomi is backstage and she is suddenly attacked by Sarah Logan, Ruby Riot & Livv Morgan. Becky Lynch comes in and tries to defend Naomi but she gets a beatdown as well.
Shane and Daniel Bryan are backstage talking and Shane tells Bryan that putting Owens & Sami in a lumberjack match was genius. Shane can fire them any time he wants but this way all the disgruntled parties get to have a shot at them. Then afterwards, they can be fired. Shane says he’s going to go kick his feet up at the hotel before he does anything drastic and just let everything unfold.
Tag Team Match: The Hype Bros vs. The Bludgeon Brothers
Bell sounds and Erick Rowan lays Mojo Rawley out with a clothesline and then knocks Zack Ryder off the apron. Luke Harper goes around the ring and starts beating on Ryder on the outside. Mojo charges at Rowan in the ring but Rowan drops him with a powerslam. Harper comes in and slaps Rowan and they get a little rough with each other to hype each other up. They execute some team offense, culminating in a team finisher that scores the pinfall.
Winners: The Bludgeon Brothers
Natalya is asked about the landscape changes in the women’s division this week but Natalya says they only change that matters is the title change that will happen later tonight when she regains her championship belt from Charlotte Flair. She says that everyone thought it was cute when the hot mess Charlotte calls a father came blubbering out to congratulate his daughter on her title win but the party ends tonight.
WWE Champion AJ Styles comes out to the ring. He gets a nice ovation from the crowd. He talks about how he came up short against Brock Lesnar at Survivor Series, but not for lack of trying. Lesnar is every bit the beast they say he is. But even Paul Heyman gave Styles his due after the match. Styles appreciates the support from the fans too but you don’t get trophies for second place in WWE. One thing though: Styles wasn’t the one limping to the back after the match. One fan likened Styles to Rocky and the thing about Rocky is that he won in the sequel. Styles leaves that out there as a hint…
