Welcome to SmackDown Live. The show opens with a video package highlighting last week’s show. We see Shane McMahon starting to fire Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn when Daniel Bryan interrupts. Bryan booked Owens and Zayn against New Day in a Lumberjack match, with Shane assuming Bryan was going to fire them himself. Owens and Zayn picked up the win, with Owens bailing and Zayn getting attacked by New Day. Backstage, Bryan booked Owens in a match with Randy Orton for tonight and decided against firing him.
Here comes Smackdown Commissioner Shane McMahon to kick off the show.
He knows everyone bleeds blue here in Kentucky. Shane is aware of two superstars who don’t. He says these two superstars betrayed the entire Smackdown team. Shane says he was about to fire those two – Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn – as they admitted to having no respect for WWE authority or any of the fans. He brings up Daniel Bryan having another idea to book them in a Lumberjack match. Shane figured he would fire them both afterwards, but that didn’t happen. He introduces the Smackdown GM.
Daniel Bryan heads to the ring to a big reaction from Lexington. Bryan shakes hands with Shane and grabs a mic. A loud “DANIEL BRYAN” chant starts up. Bryan talks about believing in second changes involving Owens and Zayn. He admits they should have never interfered in the Survivor Series main event. Bryan says Shane’s temperament can get the better of him at times. Shane admits this, but reminds Bryan that Owens beat up his father in this ring, Zayn got involved in his Hell in a Cell match and they betrayed the entire roster.
Bryan says they did those things in the name of competition. “I see real talent. If we fire them, ultimately, they are just going to end up on Monday Night RAW.” Shane is fine with that and how it will become Stephanie McMahon’s problem. Bryan says he was left in charge last week and he took this job because he was under the impression Shane didn’t want a “yes” man. He thinks he’s the guy for Shane if he wants to utilize the best possible talent right here on Smackdown Live. “I just need you to trust me,” adds Bryan. Shane says he does trust Bryan and brings up booking Owens vs. Randy Orton tonight. He wants to add to that idea a little bit. Shane is barring Zayn from ringside and the match is now under No DQ rules. Shane shakes hands with Bryan as they continue to talk off mic.
Backstage, Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens approach Daniel Bryan. Zayn says Bryan can’t possibly agree with Shane McMahon barring him from ringside. Owens isn’t sure what Orton will do tonight under No DQ rules. Zayn wants Bryan to fix this. Bryan says they aren’t the only ones trying to keep their jobs around here and says the answer is “hell no.”
The New Day vs. Chad Gable and Shelton Benjamin
WWE Smackdown Tag Team Champions The Usos are at ringside and dancing along to New Day’s music. New Day has pancakes with them. Big E gives some to The Usos. We start with Chad Gable and Xavier Woods (Kofi Kingston joins him with Big E on the outside tonight). Woods drops Gable early. Tag to Kofi who kicks Gable in the chest. Woods follows that with a sliding clotheslines, Kofi with a splash, Woods with a flying elbow and Kofi with a springboard splash off the ropes for a two count. Tag to Woods who eats a kick to the face from Gable and then one from Benjamin when he gets the tag.
Back again and Benjamin is taking it to Woods. Gable tags in and Benjamin holds Woods up as Gable delivers a knee. Gable pushes Woods back into the corner and sets him up on top of it. Gable goes to the second rope and grabs for a belly-to-belly. Woods beats him back and then delivers a missile drop kick. Woods crawls to his corner and manages to get the tag as Gable tags Benjamin. Kofi comes out hot and delivers a series of attacks to Benjamin. Kofi hits Benjamin with a high cross-body but Benjamin rolls it through into a pin. Kofi kicks out.
Kofi gets back in it and lays Benjamin out, landing a moondrop for good measure. Woods tags in and Kofi holds Benajmin as Woods delivers a huge blow off the top rope. Woods pins and gets the fall.
Winners: The New Day
Natalya and Charlotte agree to put their rivalry on hold so that they, along with Naomi, can teach Ruby Riot, Liv Morgan and Sarah Logan a lesson: you don’t build a name off the women from Smackdown Live.
Tag Team Match: The Bludgeon Brothers vs. The Hype Bros
Match begins and Luke Harper and Erick Rowan quickly dismantle Zack Ryder and Mojo Rawley. Harper and Rowan hit Ryder with their double chokeslam maneuver for the pinfall.
Winners: The Bludgeon Brothers
After the match, The Hype Bros are being interviewed about how they haven’t been able to get it together lately. Ryder starts saying that the division has evolved and now they have to evolve… when suddenly Mojo attacks Ryder from behind. He takes Ryder to the ground and then wails on him, yelling in his face, “The Hype Bros are dead! You here me?!” over and over, beating him all the while. The crowd begins to chant, “This is awesome!” Finally, officials come out to the ring and manage to separate them.
Backstage, Mojo is asked about what he just did to Ryder and he replies, “Like Zack said… the landscape has changed.”
Bobby Roode is asked how he feels about United States Champion Baron Corbin ‘accidentally’ hitting him during the Lumberjack Match last week. Roode says it was no accident. Corbin senses that Roode is someone who is a threat to his US Title reign and he lashes out at anyone he perceives as a threat. Corbin enters the scene and tells Roode he’s delusional if he thinks he’s scared of him. Roode says there is only one way to prove it, and that’s by defending the title against him tonight. Corbin thinks and replies, “No.”
The Singh Brothers come out and introduce Jinder Mahal. He comes out to the ring and then WWE Champion AJ Styles follows. When Styles gets in the ring, Jinder attacks him and beats him from pillar to post. Styles ends up laid out at ringside as it cuts to commercial.
