Welcome to SmackDown Live. We get a recap video package from last week. Tom Phillips addressed JBL’s departure from SmackDown and introduced Corey Graves as the new color commentator. Phillips hyped Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Randy Orton for tonight. We see Orton backstage cutting a promo about how Nakamura is a star questioned if he would rise or fall. Nakamura vowed to put down “The Viper.”
James Ellsworth introduced Carmella, but Kevin Owens interrupted by walking down to the ring and announced that he would be special guest referee for the next match. This led to Shane McMahon walking out and saying that Owens has been very disrespectful towards him. Owens brought up how McMahon cost him the US Title at SummerSlam and that McMahon never wanted him on SmackDown. McMahon said that he doesn’t want Owens on SmackDown and that the only reason Owens was Universal Champion was due to Triple H handing him the title. McMahon said that Owens should blame himself for not being successful. Owens wondered if McMahon wants the spotlight because Vince didn’t give him enough attention. Owens brought up McMahon’s kids and McMahon told him not to do so. Owens mocked McMahon for falling off of things. Owens said that the McMahon family would be better off if Shane died in the helicopter crash. This led to McMahon attacking Owens and a brawl broke out. McMahon beat him down until security stopped him. Daniel Bryan ran down and was confused by McMahon’s actions.
Non-Title Match: Natalya vs. Carmella w/ James Ellsworth
Natalya with a side headlock takedown early on Carmella. Carmella with a spinning head scissors takedown and follows it up with a dropkick for a two count. Natalya with a big slap. Carmella slaps her right back. Carmella bails to the outside.
Carmella avoids a Sharpshooter attempt back live. Natalya tosses Carmella to the corner. Carmella fires back with a superkick. Ellsworth accidentally throws the Money in the Bank briefcase inside the ring. Carmella yells at Ellsworth that she doesn’t want to cash in the briefcase right now. Natalya rolls up Carmella and gets the pinfall.
After the match, we see James Ellsworth accidentally dropped the briefcase inside the ring when he jumped up on the ring apron to distract Natalya. Back live, Carmella grabs a mic and Ellsworth is apologizing to her. She says he doesn’t have to apologize. Carmella says Ellsworth is the sorriest excuse for a human being she’s ever met. She says he isn’t even a human. Carmella calls him a genetic defect. She doesn’t understand why he is still employed. Carmella calls Ellsworth a charity case and that his mother should have given him away at birth. She calls him lucky to even be in here. Carmella says they are done.
Dolph Ziggler and we get the usual music and look. Ziggler grabs a mic and says the entire WWE Universe has no appreciation for what he can do in the ring. He calls himself the greatest performer in WWE history. Ziggler said they just want some dumb gimmick.
He throws down the mic and heads to the back. John Cena’s music goes off and Ziggler runs back out with a Cena hat on. Ziggler tosses it to the crowd and mocks Cena talking to the camera. He stops himself and says the crowd must want nostalgia.
Ziggler heads to the back. He walks back out with a woman to the “Macho Man” Randy Savage’s theme. Ziggler is wearing a red robe and says the crowd must not be buying it. He gives the robe to the woman and tells her to head to the back.
Ziggler once again goes backstage. He comes back out to Naomi’s theme wearing glowing hair. Ziggler does the Naomi knee slide. He says the crowd must want “dumb ass” stuff like this. Ziggler says anyone can do that, but no one can do what he does in the ring.
Singles Match: Sami Zayn vs. Aiden English
They lock up and Zayn hit a monkey flip. Zayn with a shoulder block then a clothesline. Zayn with a series of strikes and then a big boot. Zayn missed a crossbody and English rolled him up for the win.
Post-match, English started signing but Zayn ran him off to the backstage area.
We see The New Day talking with Bryan backstage but The Usos walked in and announced that they would defend the titles against The New Day in a Street Fight. Bryan got a phone call and he mentioned making it known in the ring.
Bryan walks out and demands that McMahon come out to the ring. Bryan reminded McMahon that he was going to attack The Miz last year after taunting him. However, McMahon told him to put the WWE and fans first. Bryan said that every week he restrained himself from attacking Miz for the best of the company and the show. Bryan told McMahon that he can’t attack their Superstars. McMahon agreed with him but pointed out that when someone talks about his family, there is no coming back from that blind rage. McMahon said that if the shoe was on the foot then Bryan would do the same. Bryan brought up how Owens would be suing WWE and how it would affect the SmackDown Superstars. McMahon promised to smooth things over with Owens. Bryan said that it’s too late for that and that he got a call from Vince McMahon. On that call, Vince told Bryan to inform Shane that he was indefinitely suspended. Bryan then left the ring.
Jinder Mahal cut a backstage promo how he represents the greatest country in the world and that he is the greatest WWE Champion of all-time. He noted that he would be watching the main event very closely. He vowed to make the winner fall to him at Hell in a Cell.
Singles Match: Baron Corbin vs. Tye Dillinger (AJ Styles on commentary)
They lock up and Dillinger clotheslines him to the floor.
We’re back with Corbin in control of Dillinger. He sent him into the middle rope and back into the ring. Moments later, Dillinger made his comeback by landing a series of strikes to Corbin in the corner. Corbin with a cheap shot then hit End of Days for the win.
