WWE SmackDown Results – May 16th, 2017: Baron Corbin vs. Randy Orton, AJ Styles vs. Jinder Mahal

Welcome to SmackDown Live. United States Champion Kevin Owens is in the ring for the Highlight Reel. He brought out how he took out Chris Jericho and that he is taking over Jericho’s show. He vowed that Jericho would never be seen again. A recap video of Owens’ attack on Jericho was shown. Owens said that Jericho is now on the injured list and that what he did to Jericho is a sneak peek to what he will do to AJ Styles at Backlash. Styles walked out and said that he didn’t think Owens would steal Jericho’s show. Owens said that he could do everything better than Jericho and that includes beating Styles. Owens said that he would never invite him onto his show. Styles vowed to beat Owens at Backlash and take the US Title. Styles said that they don’t have to wait until Sunday, which led to Jinder Mahal walking out and said that he was supposed to appear on the show. Owens agreed and said Mahal was going to talk about his match against Randy Orton at Backlash. Mahal showed footage of him pinning Orton last week. Mahal vowed to be WWE Champion. Styles told him to focus on tonight, so he can make to Backlash. Mahal said that Styles would lose tonight just like Orton will lose at Backlash. Owens said that Styles would lose tonight and Sunday he would lose to him. Styles went after Owens, but Owens ducked out of the ring. Styles told Mahal to get in the ring so they can start his highlight reel.

-Commercial Break-

Singles Match: AJ Styles vs. Jinder Mahal.

They lock up to begin the match and Mahal put Styles on the apron, but Styles flipped his way back into the ring and hit a drop kick. Mahal sent him face first into the turnbuckle. Mahal went for a suplex, but Styles caught him with a shoulder block then a springboard forearm strike. Styles hit him with a series of kicks then went for the Styles Clash, but Mahal blocked it. Styles with a series of strikes but the Singh Brothers distracted him, and Mahal sent him into the ropes and a running knee strike for 2.

-Commercial Break-

We’re back with Mahal in control of Styles. Moments later, Styles fought back and hit a drop kick when Mahal went for a dive off the top rope. Mahal knocked him down and hit a series of shoulder blocks in the corner. Mahal followed it up with a big boot for 2. Mahal caught him with a kick and hit a neck breaker for 2. Styles knocked him down and hit a baseball slide out of the ring. Styles tossed him back into the ring and hit a forearm shot. Owens, who was on commentary, hit Styles in the knee with the US Title as the referee was distracted. Mahal hit his finisher for the win.

Winner: Mahal.

-Commercial Break-

A vignette hyping Lana’s SmackDown debut was shown.

There was another Fashion Files skit involving Fandango and Tyler Breeze.

Orton cut a promo about his upcoming match with Mahal. He said that people don’t like Mahal because he’s an a**.

-Commercial Break-

Tag Team Match: Tyler Breeze & Fandango vs. Primo & Epico

Primo & Epico started beating down Breeze in the early part of the match. They worked him over with quick tags until Breeze fought back with a kick to Primo and got the hot tag to Fandango, who then hit a series of strikes to Epico. Fandango caught him with a heel kick. Fandango clotheslines Primo to the floor and hit Falcon Arrow to Epico for the win.

Winner: Tyler Breeze & Fandango

Post-match, The Usos walked out and cut a promo about how they wrestle for the Tag Team Titles. They said that they have five days to get ready. Usos read them their rights about how they will get her and vowed to retain at Backlash.

-Commercial Break-

Contract signing time. Shane McMahon walked down to the ring and cut a promo about how he feels that SmackDown Live is WWE’s best brand. He introduced the two teams for the six-woman tag team match at Backlash. Charlotte Flair, Naomi, Becky Lynch as well as Tamina, Carmella, and Natalya were introduced. Natalya said that at Backlash they will prove the best there is the best there was and the best there ever will be. She then signed the contract. Lynch said that she couldn’t wait to slap the face of every single one of them. Naomi said that she would snatch Carmella bald. Flair got the microphone and said that that they need to bring everything that they have and that she would be coming after the SmackDown Women’s Title after Backlash. James Ellsworth stopped McMahon from wrapping up things and said that the kid could take care of himself. McMahon had no idea what he was talking about. Ellsworth said that they would steal Naomi’s glow. Carmella attacked Naomi and McMahon separated them. He booked Carmella vs. Naomi next.

-Commercial Break-

Singles Match: Naomi vs. Carmella.

They start brawling to begin the match. Naomi knocked her down and hit a drop kick in the corner for 2. Naomi worked over the left arm of Carmella and hit a back kick. Ellsworth pulled Carmella out of the ring and the referee ejected him from ringside.

-Commercial Break-

We’re back with Naomi in control of Carmella. Tamina grabbed Naomi’s leg and was also ejected. This distracted Naomi and Carmella rolled her up for the win.

Winner: Carmella.

Dolph Ziggler cut a promo about Shinsuke Nakamura in the backstage area. He then showed a video package of his best moments during his career and his rivalry with Nakamura. He said that everyone including him is looking forward to seeing Nakamura make his main roster debut including him.

-Commercial Break-

Sami Zayn announced in a backstage promo that he would be facing Baron Corbin at this Sunday’s Backlash PPV event. Corbin then attacked him from behind.

-Commercial Break-

Singles Match: Baron Corbin vs. Randy Orton.

They lock up to begin the match. They exchanged right hands and Corbin ducked out to ringside to send us to break.

-Commercial Break-

We’re back with Corbin in control of Orton. He hit Orton with a big boot for a near fall. Corbin heeled it up with the crowd as he talked trash to Orton. Corbin went for a chokeslam but Orton fought out of it. Corbin missed a spear and ate the ring post. Orton hit a powerslam then hit a DDT off the second rope. Corbin connected with Deep Six for a near fall. Orton hit the RKO for the win.
