Author’s POV, Running Commentary & Thoughts:
Kickoff
- It was casually mentioned that Big E will face Baron Corbin on the kickoff. No announcement about Sasha Banks yet.
- Someone (I think Kevin Patrick) just said “Am I on camera?” – Gotta call WWE out on the audio issues just like we would with another company like Impact.
- WWE held a contest to give someone a chance to announce a match. The girl’s pretty good!
- I love the idea that Corbin’s so broke that he stole the Money in the Bank briefcase and even in this match, he’s more concerned with leaving with that than winning the match. It’s nice for Big E to get the opening match, too, in front of the live crowd.
- Boos twice for showing Logan Paul in the audience.
I’m digging the opening video package. This is pretty neat. It’s nothing super special, but it’s just a solid intro.
Raw Tag Team Championship Match
- Nice pop for Matt Riddle.
- How does AJ Styles just casually do a backflip into a DDT like he does? Truly phenomenal.
- This is a pretty standard match, but I’m digging it.
- Oh wow, it’s over! This felt like it went by rather fast.
- Big fan of RK-Bro winning the titles. They not only made sense for a team that could beat AJ Styles and Omos, but they’re among the best things in WWE today.
- It was also smart to start the show with a babyface title change.
Alexa Bliss vs. Eva Marie
- Being in broad daylight really hurts the entrance for Alexa Bliss. This isn’t working well.
- “Eva Marie is worse than an airport tuna sandwich” sign in the crowd!
- Shouldn’t the referee disqualify Eva Marie for hitting Alexa with Lilly the puppet?
- So this is as simple as Bliss beats Marie by pinfall. No gimmicks or anything. How uninspired.
- After the match, Doudrop calls out Marie for losing the match, puts on her robe and leaves. There goes that team.
United States Championship Match
- Hoping for a title change here. What about you? Comment below!
- Good even match-up, as it should be.
- There are a few moments here where I’m getting worried Priest may not actually win the title.
- Very glad to see Priest capture the belt. That was the right call.
SmackDown Tag Team Championship Match
- After having two babyface title changes, you can bet even more now that The Usos are retaining here. I figured it was guaranteed before as is, but now, with this placement on the card, it’s as surefire as can be. The match should still be good, though.
- The outfits Dominik and Rey Mysterio have on remind me of Starburst.
- The crowd was eating up the hot tag to Rey here after The Usos were toying with Dominik for so long. Nice.
- NICE superkick to Rey. That looked great cause it was a legitimate kick to the face.
- I didn’t expect Rey to kick out of the splash from Jey.
- If you add a few more superkicks and another splash to the mix, though, that’s too much for Rey. The champions retain after another rock solid match.
According to Tiffany Haddish, Damian Priest became a first-time national champion earlier tonight. I could have sworn he won the United States title instead of the National Championship.
Impromptu Rick Boogs? Are we getting a random Intercontinental Championship match to try to fill the void of Sasha Banks or something? Shinsuke Nakamura was three-quarters of the way down the ramp as it was, too! Oh. No. Apparently, that was just to play Nakamura’s entrance theme and kill some time. Okay.
SmackDown Women’s Championship Match
- So they waited until literally the last possible second to replace Sasha Banks and they end up with just Carmella. I really hope WWE has another surprise in store and this isn’t just supposed to be considered good enough. Anything short of Becky Lynch coming back will be upsetting for the WWE Universe.
- And there’s The Man. That was literally the one and only way WWE was going to be able to get out of this okay.
- Ideally, this becomes a Triple Threat match and Carmella takes the pin so Belair can retain. That way, Lynch doesn’t lose but she doesn’t have to dethrone Belair in the process.
- Just a regular singles match, then. I don’t know how they’re going to get out of this one without upsetting half the audience.
- WOW, they just have Belair lose a super quick squash?! What the hell was that?! Becky Lynch is over and everything, but what a massive middle finger to Belair. This is stereotypical WWE booking philosophy of only caring about a handful of people and once they return, everyone else is worthless. Woooow.
Drew McIntyre vs. Jinder Mahal
- This was nothing. It was absolute filler and not even worth bothering to pay much attention to. Nothing happened, it was a generic match with a predictable outcome and zero advancements for this feud. This would have been a waste of Monday Night Raw, let alone on a pay-per-view like this. It should have been a gimmick match or something—ANYTHING—other than just “McIntyre beats Mahal, as expected, and then everyone runs away when he gets the sword and does nothing with it.”
Raw Women’s Championship Match
- Are you also not surprised Nikki A.S.H. gets the first entrance and Charlotte Flair comes out last? Yet another means of showing that the champion isn’t WWE’s priority.
- That win from Lynch over Belair really sucked the wind out of this show. It doesn’t help that I’m just assuming Flair wins, too. And before you say it, that’s not a criticism of how talented Lynch and Flair are, as they’re great, but it’s just annoying WWE can’t help itself with things like that.
- Literally no reaction from the crowd when Nikki counters a Riptide into a DDT. The audience hasn’t been dead for this match or anything, but the whole arena just collectively didn’t care about that reversal.
- And just like that, Nikki taps out, as expected. What a waste of Money in the Bank again, and more proof WWE would just do Lynch vs. Flair every show if they could.
Edge vs. Seth Rollins
- The Brood entrance was cool. I always liked that. It’s good to see Edge having some fun with this. Naturally, I wish they would have played more into that with the whole Messiah gimmick in the build itself, rather than failing to put in the effort until the night before and thinking going from A to Z in one step was good enough.
- They’re working well together, but nothing’s standing out to me in particular to talk about. It’s just a solid match so far. Let’s hope it picks up and gets even better.
- Glam Slam from Edge, eh? That was interesting.
- A spear through the ropes to the outside. Edge is taking more risks as he gets more comfortable back in the ring.
- I did not at all expect Rollins to kick out from that spear after the corkscrew attempt. Surprise near-fall for sure.
- Edgecator! Very cool!
- If this was going to end with a submission, I’d have ended it with the Edgecator instead of the crossface.
- Great match. That might’ve been my favorite of the night.
John Morrison and The Miz went to the ring ready to soak the audience with the Drip Stick 2000, but Xavier Woods (parodying Scott Hall in the process) hijacked the water gun instead and squirted them down. The crowd didn’t seem as into it as intended.
WWE Championship Match
- Well, the entrances are done. Should I start counting the seconds down?
- Boos for Goldberg on top, if I’m hearing correctly.
- Lashley just hit his head on the ring post after the spear on the outside, didn’t he?
- And now, Goldberg lands on his head after a chop block.
- The match actually ends with the referee calling it, saying Goldberg can no longer compete. Goldberg really doesn’t look like the beast he once was.
- Goldberg’s son Gage steps in the ring and gets taken out with a Hurt Lock! Nice! MVP makes a point to say there was no way he would have known who was attacking him from behind, ha!
Universal Championship Match
- Kenny King banner. TONS of John Cena signs.
- This is old school John Cena against a monster heel type material, but with a 2021 vibe to it. I’m not hating it, that’s for sure.
- Even the slower parts of the match are working for me. It’s not Match of the Year caliber (or at least, not yet) but it’s fundamentally a thumbs up kind of match.
- Oh man. That Attitude Adjustment got my heart racing for a split second. I thought Cena might have the win there for a moment.
- That second one through the table REALLY had me even more.
- A third Attitude Adjustment, this time off the ropes, but I’ll admit that that one didn’t get me as much.
- Damn good match that ends with a spear from Roman Reigns.
- Time for Brock Lesnar to make an appearance!
