Cena is known as “the face of the WWE for a long time” and one of the most polarising and divisive figures in WWE (or even professional wrestling) history, despite playing a heroic character for the majority of his career.

Cena started training to become a professional wrestler in 1999 at Ultimate Pro Wrestling’s California-based “Ultimate University” operated by Rick Bassman. Once he was placed into an in-ring role, Cena began using a semi-robotic character known as “The Prototype”. He won his first championship in April 2000, the UPW Heavyweight Championship. In 2001, Cena signed a developmental contract with the World Wrestling Federation (now WWE). He was assigned to its developmental territory Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW). During his time there, Cena wrestled under the ring names “The Prototype” and “Mr. P”. He held the OVW Heavyweight Championship for three months and the OVW Southern Tag Team Championship.

Cena made his TV debut on Smackdown, answering an open challenge from Kurt Angle and losing the match. Cena started out as a babyface, but would turn heel after turning on Billy Kidman for losing their match. He would begin appearing as freestyle rap artist, using the catchphrase “Word Life”, and was lately accompanied by Bull Buchanan. In 2003, Cena challenged Brock Lesnar for the WWE title, but was unsuccessful. Cena got his first taste of WWE success at Wrestlemania XX when he defeated Big Show for the WWE United States Championship. He won the title a couple of more times during 2004. Cena almost won the Royal Rumble in 2005, but was eventually defeated by Batista in sudden death rules.

At Wrestlemania XXI, Cena defeated JBL to claim his first WWE Championship. After defending the title against JBL, Bischoff picked Jericho to be the one who took the title from him. Even though Cena was the face, and Jericho was the heel, a vocal section of live crowds began to boo Cena. This carried on throughout his feud with Angle, and continues to this day. The announce team was forced to acknowledge the dislike for John Cena, and started to label him as a “controversial champion”, on account of his ring style and fashion sense. Cena lost the championship to Edge after he cashed it in, immediately after Cena had won the Elimination Chamber. After winning the title back, Cena feuded with Triple H, and still received negative responses from live crowds.

During ECW One Night Stand 2006, the negative response got “extreme”, as the ECW fans did everything in their power to belittle John Cena. He received chants like “f**k you Cena”, “same old s**t”, and “you can’t wrestle”. There was also a sign saying “If Cena wins we riot”, and after Cena tried throwing his shirt into the crowd, the fans would throw it back at him. Eventually Cena gave up trying to throw his shirt into the crowd. Rob Van Dam was his opponent, and every fan in the building was behind RVD to win. Cena lost the title after Edge speared him through a table, the crowd responded with “Thank you Edge”, and the crowd were elated when Rob Van Dam held both the WWE and ECW Championships. After defeating Edge at TLC for the title, Cena would go on to hold the title for 380 days, the longest reign in over 19 years. He was out of action due to injury

He was estimated to be out for seven months, but returned a few months later to enter #30 in the Royal Rumble and win the match. Cena challenged for the title at Wrestlemania but lost. He renewed the feud with JBL, and soon found himself feuding with Batista as well before he suffered an herniated disc. Cena returned at Survivor Series and defeated Chris Jericho for the World Heavyweight Championship. He lost the title to Edge at No Way Out, regained the title at Wrestlemania, but lost it again to Edge at Backlash. Cena returned to challenging for the WWE Championship, and defeated Randy Orton for his fourth reign in an “I Quit” match. Cena lost the title to Orton at Hell in a Cell. At Bragging Rights, Cena defeated Orton in an Ironman match for the title. He lost the title to Sheamus in a tables match at the TLC PPV. Cena regained the title at the Elimination Chamber, but soon lost it to Batista. He defeated Batista at Wrestlemania XVI for the title.

Cena started to feud with The Nexus, and they cost him the title at the Fatal Four-way PPV when they interfered in the fatal four-way match, which Sheamus won. Cena would continue to feud with The Nexus, CM Punk, and the New Nexus. At Wrestlemania, Cena lost the WWE Championship match to The Miz after interference from The Rock. The next night, it was made official one year in advance, that Cena and The Rock would meet at the following Wrestlemania. Cena won the WWE Championship back at Extreme Rules. Cena lost the title to CM Punk at Money in the Bank, before CM Punk would leave the company with the title. After a new WWE Championship was made, Rey Mysterio was crowned the new champion, and John Cena challenged him to a match on the same night, defeating Mysterio and becoming a record breaking nine time WWE Champion. CM Punk returned and defeated Cena at Summerslam to unify the titles.

After Del Rio defeated CM Punk, Cena defeated Del Rio for his tenth reign. He lost it back to Del Rio at Hell in a Cell. The Rock and Cena formed a tag team and defeated The Miz and R-Truth at Survivor Series. In the “Once in a lifetime” match at Wrestlemania, Cena lost to The Rock. Cena soon ended up in a feud with a returning Brock Lesnar, and defeated him at Extreme Rules in a bloody match. At Money in the Bank, Cena won the (Raw) Money in the Bank contract. At Raw 1000, Cena had announced he would cash in the contract to face CM Punk. Cena won the match by DQ after Big Show interfered, making him the first wrestler to cash in and fail to win the gold.

Cena continued to feud with CM Punk and failed to take the WWE Championship from him on multiple occasions. He started a feud with Dolph Ziggler, involving AJ Lee and Vickie Guerrero. 2012 ended up being the first year Cena had not won any championships since 2003. In January 2013, Cena won his second Royal Rumble, becoming the fourth wrestler to achieve this feat. Cena feuded with The Shield and CM Punk for the rest of the year. After The Rock defeated CM Punk for the WWE Championship, Cena challenged The Rock for it, and he defeated The Rock at Wrestlemania 29 for the WWE Championship. Cena defended the title against Ryback and Mark Henry, but after choosing Daniel Bryan as number one contender, lost the title clean to Daniel Bryan at Summerslam. Cena took time off after surgery for a triceps tear.

Cena returned in October and defeated Del Rio for the World Heavyweight Championship at Hell in a Cell. Cena became the first champion to successfully defeat a wrestler who had cashed in Money in the Bank, against Damien Sandow. After suggesting WWE should have one champion, Triple H made the unification match for TLC. Cena lost the World title to Randy Orton at the PPV in a TLC match. Cena continued to challenge Orton but was stopped due to interference from The Wyatt Family. Cena feuded with Bray Wyatt going forward, and defeated Bray Wyatt on multiple occasions in 2014. At Money in the Bank 2014, Cena won the WWE World Heavyweight Championship in the Money in the Bank ladder match. He lost the title to Brock Lesnar in dramatic fashion at Summerslam 2014.

After failing to regain the championship, Cena began feuding with The Authority. After Team Cena ousted The Authority out of power at Survivor Series 2015, Cena turned his attention to the undefeated Rusev, who was also holding the United States Champion. After losing to Rusev at Fast Lane, John Cena defeated Rusev for the United States Championship at Wrestlemania 31. His feud with Rusev continued, and Cena introduced an open challenge every week for the United States Championship.
