Clark began his professional wrestling career in 2014, when he debuted in the Maryland Championship Wrestling promotion where he trained. During his time there, he won the MCW Tag Team Championship with Lio Rush. After competing in several other independent promotions, Clark participated in the WWE’s reality show Tough Enough, a series focused on finding new wrestlers for WWE.

Clark did not win the contest, but he was signed to a developmental contract and was assigned to WWE’s farm territory, NXT. In 2017, Clark debuted his new gimmick, a Prince-inspired character called Velveteen Dream. After several well-received matches, Dream became very popular in NXT and defeated Johnny Gargano to win the NXT North American Championship. However, after multiple controversies, Clark was released from WWE in 2021.
