- AEW World Championship 60-Minute Iron Man Match: MJF (c) retained over Bryan Danielson
Author’s POV, Running Commentary & Thoughts:
Zero Hour Pre-Show
- Mark Briscoe and The Lucha Bros defeated Ari Daivari and The Varsity Athletes in a perfectly fine opening contest. I can’t say it would have been the match I would have booked on the card if I were in control, particularly when looking at other people not on the lineup, but it was fine.
- Everything else on the Zero Hour was just promos, video packages and interviews hyping up the matches, as a pre-show typically should be. No grand announcements took place or anything. For instance, Adam Cole said “someone” on the AEW roster will get the best version of him in his comeback match, but didn’t reveal his opponent.
Chris Jericho vs. Ricky Starks
- Immediately, the commentary team is already tossing out the idea that The Jericho Appreciation Society will in some way interfere, despite the stipulation that they’re banned from ringside. That makes me even more suspicious that someone other than a JAS member is going to pop up.
- Rock solid match. I don’t think it captured the magic I was hoping it would, but I still enjoyed it. Starks came out of this looking like he really knows what he’s doing and is worthy of heading into the main event scene.
The Final Burial
- I’m down for a casket match. This should be fun.
- Christian is bleeding from his nose.
- Jungle Boy is going to have a toooon of red marks on his back tomorrow from taking tons of belt lashings from Christian.
- Nice flip from Jack Perry off the stage.
- Jungle Boy finishes things with a con-chair-to.
- The way the coffin fell down into the grave after Perry slammed the lid shut looked goofy to me. No need to have that be so fast in the future.
AEW World Trios Championship Match
- Good moment with Black escaping a One Winged Angel, then Omega dodging a Black Mass kick, and the two of them sitting down after.
- Another good moment of Matt Jackson tagging himself in, asking for Brodie King, and then trying to get Nick to tag in instead. That was funny.
- Julia Hart eats a V-trigger. Omega walks into a Black Mass, but Nick Jackson broke up the pin. That was a close one.
- Eventually, The House of Black is able to pick up the victory! We have new trios tag team champions.
- That was exactly the type of match everyone should have anticipated. Lots of fun from start to finish.
AEW Women’s World Championship Three-Way Match
- It’s good to see Saraya able to do more maneuvers. This is the most I think we’ve seen of her so far.
- Admittedly, I’m still not loving the match. It’s fine. I’m sure some people will rate it much higher and act like it is a 4.5 star match or something just because they’re invested in the people, but I’m calling it about average; slightly above, maybe.
- Close call with Hayter breaking up Soho’s pinfall attempt.
- Hayter’s able to trap Soho for a pin to retain, and as soon as the bell rings, Toni Storm is in the ring to attack Hayter. Britt Baker comes to the rescue. Soho sent Storm and Saraya out of the ring, but then took out Hayter and Baker, too. Soho’s actually aligned herself with Storm and Saraya (as expected) and the three spray paint Baker and Hayter.
- The fake-out doesn’t work super well for me, as it is entirely just to pop the audience and makes no logical sense. But I’m glad Hayter retained, I’m glad Soho joined Storm and Saraya, and I think the match did its job. That’s about all you can ask for.
Texas Death Match
- The vast majority of this match was dedicated toward barbed wire use. Naturally, every part of it was a “nope, I wouldn’t do that” type moment.
- Both guys are leaving this bloody messes with a lot of scars and stitches, for sure.
- The bricks had me the most frightened that someone would slam the other on them, vertically. Thankfully, that didn’t happen. Still, tons of ouch spots.
- I’m a big fan of the finish, which saw Moxley tied up in the ropes and chains, tapping out. Hangman won by hanging his opponent. That’s great.
AEW TNT Championship Match
- At this point, with the haircut in particular changing his appearance a bit, I think Wardlow should drop the singlet look and just go with trunks or something else.
- I’m prepping my “new champion crowned” notes. With Powerhouse Hobbs the next in line for a shot, I’m even more certain Wardlow is winning this.
- While I was right about that, I was definitely not anticipating Wardlow would win by submission. Taking out Samoa Joe with his own rear-naked choke hold is an interesting way to go.
AEW World Tag Team Championship Four-Way Match
- Orange Cassidy very slowly winding up his arm for a strike in the corner, only for the heels to cut him short made laugh.
- The crowd seems firmly behind The Acclaimed more than any other team, which isn’t surprising. I don’t think this crowd’s getting their wish tonight, though.
- It took Danhausen, Cassidy and Billy Gunn to take out Satnam Singh. Right after, Austin and Colten nailed their dad with a low-blow (that sounds awful).
- Jarrett missed a guitar shot. Caster was able to grab it, but Aubrey Edwards took it from him. This led to a distraction where Lethal was able to take out Caster, who then got hit with a Stroke from Jarrett, but kicked out. Close call. Jarrett pushed Aubrey, who pushed back, leading to a blind tag sequence and some pinfall attempts from Danhausen. Lots of energy going on right now.
- Finally, The Gunns take out Danhausen for the win to retain their titles.
- Following the match, The Gunns demand respect as the best tag team in the world. Out comes FTR to take them out.
60-Minute Iron Man Match – AEW World Championship
- MJF had a special entrance with an orchestra playing a version of his theme. He also came to the ring wearing a variant of that devil mask from All Out. Neat.
- The story from the start of this is entirely about conditioning. Both are keeping up with each other relatively well—even having a synced-up double kip-up.
- ROFL MJF walks into the crowd, then tosses a kid’s drink back at him. “Oh no. Is this gonna cost me a star, Dave? Maybe I won’t get The Bryan Danielson Award!”
- 15 minutes down. No falls yet for either guy.
- Gotta love those spots where there are just tons of 2-counts with everyone rolling around into different pinning combinations.
- At around 35 minutes left, Danielson scores the first pinfall.
- MJF low-blows Danielson, giving him a 2-0 lead. But MJF immediately follows that with two pinfalls to even up the score.
- Max hits a pretty perfect elbow drop to Danielson, jumping off the top rope onto the outside and crashing Bryan through a table.
- MJF follows that up a minute or so later with a tombstone piledriver into the rest of the table that hadn’t broken yet. He’s able to score a third point, making it 3-2 in favor of MJF.
- 20 minutes left. Make that 15 minutes. No points in the meantime there.
- MJF blades for a diving headbutt from Danielson. He’s GUSHING blood, fast, and there’s 11 and a half minutes left.
- MJF taps out. 3-3 score with 10:30 left.
- “This is wrestling” chant with 5 minutes remaining. MJF is crying. Danielson’s laughing.
- The third water bottle gets brought out by MJF and the crowd chants for H2O.
- MJF hits a tombstone from the middle turnbuckle, but can’t get to a pinfall. 2 minutes left.
- Danielson reverses a pin attempt into a single-leg crab with 60 seconds left.
- The time ran out and immediately after, MJF tapped, but obviously, that doesn’t count. The match is ruled a draw. MJF retains.
- The fans chant “bullshit” while Tony Schiavone says he’s getting some more information on commentary. He heads to the ring and passes the information along. The match has been ruled to continue by Tony Khan. It will continue for one more fall under sudden death rules.
- MJF hits another low-blow on Danielson. The ref doesn’t see it. That, and holding the tights, still isn’t enough for MJF to get a successful pin.
- MJF has the belt in his hands and Bryce Remsburg reminds him if he gets disqualified, he loses. As that’s being taken care of, MJF plans to use the Dynamite Diamond ring, but Danielson avoids it. MJF kicks out of a knee from Danielson.
- Danielson locks in the single-leg crab again. MJF only taps out when he has already reached the ropes. While the referee is distracted, MJF hits Danielson in the head with an oxygen tank and hides the evidence. Danielson’s out…but manages to get his hand up before it falls the third time!
- Danielson eventually has to tap out, though, and MJF retains.
- This is going on my Match of the Year list, for sure. Fantastic.
