Author’s POV, Running Commentary & Thoughts:

Kickoff + Eight-Person Mixed Tag Team Match

  • Nothing going on for the pre-show, as per usual. Let’s see what happens in the match.
  • Booker T is out of the gate saying he doesn’t know what’s going on, tossing out how Twitter is now X and so on. Hopefully, we’re in for a fun night of his commentary.
  • Meta-Four has their fake Heritage Cup ringside to offset the real trophy in Frazer’s possession.
  • Jakara Jackson saved Noam Dar from eating a splash from Frazer. Gotta admire the dedication to their leader.
  • Dragon Lee gets the pin for his team over Oro Mensah.

NXT Tag Team Championship Match

  • I love the use of music that parodies The Usual Suspects for the recap video package about Tony D’Angelo being sent to prison. The Usual Suspects is one of my favorite movies of all time. For that matter, so is The Godfather. I guess you could say I’m rooting for Tony D and Stacks to win this, right? It’s more than time for Gallus to lose their belts after such a flat and uninteresting title reign.
  • Speaking of music, you know how TNA would do lackluster copies of people’s themes that is just close enough and different enough that they wouldn’t have copyright problems? It seems like that’s the case with the Gallus theme and a few others. The previous ones were better. I miss that.
  • Acoustics, or does the audience not care about this match? Everyone looks like they’re about to yawn and the bell just rang. Pretty quiet. Hopefully, they wake up.
  • There we go. At least a middling 4-second “Tony D” chant happened.
  • Crowd is waking up a bit, but it still doesn’t have the energy I was hoping for.
  • I think we’re nearing the end of the match. Time for Joe Coffey to get involved and try to introduce a foreign object.
  • Tony D breaks up a pin. Some shenanigans are going on that distract the referee, allowing D’Angelo to use a weapon on Wolfgang instead. Double-team and we have new champs.

Weapons Wild Match

  • It’s always funny to me when there’s a deep-seeded bitter rivalry, personal issue type feud, and then someone comes out like Roxanne Perez beaming with a smile for her match. But she’s the local girl, so I’m sure she’s just too excited to contain herself, which is cute.
  • Nice! While she’s hugging her family ringside and taking pictures and all, Davenport attacks her as a hooded member of the crowd. That was an interesting way to start.
  • I see trash cans, steel chairs, a bullrope I think.
  • Davenport’s got a branding iron. But we’re not even going to pretend it is hot.
  • Davenport put Roxanne in a trash can and then whacked it a few times with the branding iron. That actually could be pretty dangerous considering that’s able to tear through those thin trash cans.
  • Davenport intimidates Roxanne’s little sister, who is doing a decent job turning on the water works for some tears. Time for Roxanne to get fired up aaaand there she goes, whipping Blair with a belt.
  • The loudest the crowd’s been so far is for Perez pulling out a table.
  • Pop Rox attempt on some chairs was blocked and followed with Davenport slamming Perez onto a trash can.
  • Oof. Perez fell off the ring apron and I’m not sure she was supposed to do that. She nearly hit her head on the steps. Thankfully, not the case.
  • Davenport is placed on the table. Perez climbs and jumps off the top rope for a splash.
  • Pop Rox onto the chairs for the win.
  • Fun match. Easily the highlight so far.

Baron Corbin vs. Gable Steveson

  • This is the first chance I’ve gotten to hear Baron Corbin’s new music. It isn’t something that’s stuck in my head yet and doesn’t have an iconic opener that would immediately make me go “Oh, that’s Corbin coming out” like Stone Cold’s shattered glass or something, but it sounds like a fine enough song.
  • Gable Steveson’s got some generic production music and a very plain singlet going on. Keep it simple until he develops some personality, I guess.
  • Steveson’s doing a good job so far. I’m glad to see that. If after all this time, he was awful, that would be a bad sign for his future.
  • I keep forgetting how young Gable is. He’s only 23. I keep thinking he’s in his late 20s, early 30s.
  • Booooo they fight on the outside and both get counted out. We have a draw and a crowd chanting “bullshit”. They’re continuing to brawl with officials trying to separate them.
  • Steveson gets the better of the fight, sending Corbin through the security barricade. It sounds like they’re trying to drone out the boos from the crowd.

Lyra Valkyria was being interviewed when Jacy Jayne interrupted and attacked her. Rhea Ripley walked by and smiled. Time for the North American title match.

Triple Threat Match for NXT North American Championship

  • Nice reception for Wes Lee.
  • Mustafa Ali is sticking to babyface, it seems.
  • Meanwhile, Dominik is so much the heel that they’re double-teaming him.
  • Very nice tornado DDT from Ali to Lee.
  • Ali hooks in a double submission with a Camel Clutch to Dominik underneath a Boston Crab to Lee.
  • Ooof. Ali goes for a 450 splash onto both and they moved, so he went cashing into the apron instead.
  • Ripley gives Lee a Riptide through the commentary table. Lee kicks out, though.
  • Dominik also tried to get the win by hitting Lee with the Women’s World Championship title belt, but Lee also kicked out of that.
  • Ali gets a 450 on Lee. Ripley pulls Ali off him. Dominik follows it up with a frog splash and pins Lee to retain.
  • Thumbs up. Good match with a good ending.

Submission Match for NXT Women’s Championship

  • I love Thea Hail’s perpetual enthusiasm.
  • Tiffany Stratton’s pink cowgirl outfit is reminding me that I still haven’t seen Barbie or Oppenheimer. I need to get on that.
  • That suicide dive devolved into just a failed catch. At least Hail didn’t land in an injury-inducing way.
  • Oh man, Stratton came SO close to landing on the top of her head with that back body drop. That was scary.
  • Hail’s locked in a submission (a single-leg crab with her knee on Hail’s back) for a long enough time, not tapping out, but Andre Chase throws in the towel on her behalf to save her. Duke Hudson is disappointed.

Backstage, Dragon Lee and Dominik Mysterio have some cross words. I had already thought Lee might be the one to dethrone Dom, and now, I think that even more so.

Schism plans to have all their followers unmask in an interrogation to determine who the two rogues are. Also on this coming Tuesday’s episode of NXT, Valkyria vs. Jayne and Eddy Thorpe vs. Dijak.

NXT Championship Match

  • Dragunov’s facial hair gives me even more suspicion that he’s turning heel. Maybe I’m just looking at this through South Park goggles.
  • I had feared this would be a segment that was “a good match and nothing more” and that’s the vibe I’m getting. You put this match in the 80s and it is an instant classic. In 2023, they haven’t done anything I can even talk about, even though it’s been rock solid. Look. We’re spoiled for good matches these days. It just means only the great things stand out. This isn’t to crap on them by any means. But if I were to watch this over again or watch Dragunov vs. Gunther, I’d go for the latter, for example.
  • “We were wondering why Dragunov was seeing red during his entrance” – because he has contacts in. *Ba dum, tiss*
  • “This is awesome” chant from the crowd as Hayes and Dragunov continue to wail on each other with neither giving up control for more than a few seconds at a time.
  • Dragunov gets a two-count from a senton.
  • Nice! Dragunov goes for a coast-to-coast that Hayes catches into a codebreaker, which doesn’t really go off in a fluid way as perfectly as it should’ve, but instead, Dragunov bounces in a fashion that made it look even cooler.
  • But then ouch, Dragunov almost dropped Hayes on his head with a powerbomb reversal and soon enough, follows it with a forearm for a very close near-fall.
  • “Fight forever” chant breaks out.
  • Hayes starts fighting back. Trick Williams grabs the title belt to help try to motivate Hayes to suck up whatever energy he has left.
  • The second time around that Trick is psyching up Melo, Dragunov jumps into Williams and takes him out.
  • Hayes hits a leg drop from the top rope and gets the pinfall to retain. Good match.
