How WWE Should Have Booked the Roman Reigns Fiasco

Hello there.

I had a whole big Roman Reigns piece written a few weeks back that would have been my first in a long while. But, having not learned from past mistakes, I lost the piece before posting it and now it likely won’t see the light of day. Tragic, I know. But life goes on and (thanks to good-ol Microsoft Word) I’ve decided, “hey, why not give this whole blog thing yet another try?” After all, I’m not doing anything else today.

So here we go.

Let’s rewind 4 weeks and a day. All the way back to when Roman Reigns dropped his world title, clean as a sheet, to Seth Rollins. And then, less then 5 minutes later, Rollins dropped the title to Dean Ambrose via
Money in the Bank cash in. Less than twenty-four hours after that fateful night, Reigns is hit with his 30-day suspension for violating the WWE wellness policy. Yadda, yadda, yadda, we have a 3-way in 6 days at Battleground. While, logically, everything does make sense, it all feels a bit rushed. It’s classic impatient WWE booking. But what if it had been done just a little bit differently? Perhaps something a little like….

Money in the Bank 2016:

The exact same match with the exact same finish. Post match, Dean Ambrose steps out onto the ramp. No music, no pomp and circumstance; just a walk out. He holds up the briefcase like, “you’re in my sights.”

Post MitB RAW:

Rollins comes out bragging about being the greatest champion of all time and winning back the title he never lost. He mentions the Reigns suspension and how there’ll be no rematch. Dean comes out. Talks about how he’s seen guy after guy win the MitB briefcase, cash it in, and be treated like a fluke. He’s earned everything in his career and when he beats Rollins for the title, Rollins will see it coming. He acknowledges that with Reigns out, there’s no #1 contender. He says that he’s cashing in his briefcase, not for tonight, but for the main event of Battleground.

Next Few Weeks:

Trash talking and match build. Rollins takes occasional shots at Reigns and Ambrose notes that while he’s disappointed in Reigns, he’s still his brother and that will never change.

Draft Day: Live Smackdown 7.19:

The #1 draft pick (going to Smackdown) is WWE champion Seth Rollins. The #2 and #3 draft picks (going to RAW) are Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns. Announcers note that with Rollins being drafted to a different show then his former Shield partners, that this is Ambrose’s only shot at the title and Reigns is basically shit-outta-luck.

Battleground 2016:

Ambrose and Rollins have a 20-25 minute main event. A cluster fuck of an ending that sees Roman Reigns make his return and intentionally spear Dean Ambrose, costing him the title.

Post Battleground RAW:

Reigns cuts a promo talking about how losing the WWE title and getting hit with the 30-day suspension was the worst 24-hours of his life. He wonders aloud, “where was my best friend, Dean Ambrose during all of this? Was he by my side, helping me through the most difficult period in my life? No. He was out there trying to win my WWE title.” Dean comes out and they get into it a little bit. Stephanie or the RAW GM or whoever comes out and says, “hey, we got 2 brands but we only have one world champion and that guy is on Smackdown. At Summerslam we will crown a world champion for the RAW brand and that champion will be the winner of the main event: Dean Ambrose vs Roman Reigns.”

Summerslam 2016:

This could go any number of ways but if you’re going to go with a new top-level babyface, you really should push him like one. Ambrose wins. Everyone goes home happy.
