Over the past several months, Seth Rollins has gotten over huge as a heel champion. However we all know that in today’s wrestling world, title reigns do not last for years and years. So the big question is not only who will be next in line to be WWE Champion, but when will it happen? The “when” is always harder to answer, because we rarely know when the WWE is going to pull the proverbial trigger.
Many news sites claim to have an “inside scoop” on when in fact the title will change hands, but the hard truth is they wrestling fans like the rest of us who are making an educated guess. When that guess rings true, they will brag about how they had the inside scoop all along. However when that does not happen, they use the typical excuse that the WWE decided to go in a different direction.
As to the “who” will win the WWE Title next, that’s a bit easier to pick out considering the lack of the talent pool at the top of the food chain. While great legends like Sting and Undertaker are at the top of that food chain, they are simply special attractions, and will most likely never see (or need for that matter) another title reign. Bearing that in mind, lets take a look at those who could be next in line.
Sheamus: Considering that Sheamus is the current MITB winner, you would think he is next on the list to win the title. However I think that the WWE would wait until the title is around the waist of a babyface,before giving him the title.
John Cena: With his Title vs Title match coming up at Summer Slam, many think Cena is next in line to win the WWE Title, for the 16th time. And while that could very well become a reality, I feel that Cena is doing a much better job pushing the US Title, along with helping the mid card ranks move up the totem pole.
Brock Lesnar: While Lesnar is truly one of the more dominant forces in the company today, I feel putting the title on him for a second reign could prove to be a mistake. The last time he held the title, it was more off tv than on. Although it did give the roster time to rejuvenate, I feel there are much more deserving people to put the title around to boost the roster even more!
Roman Reigns: Reigns has come a long way in the past year, since being booed out at the Royal Rumble. His mic skills have improved, and with the small exception to a recent fan throwing a MITB briefcase at him, Reigns continues to get over with the fans in the past several months. You could also consider the fact that if a WWE Champion walked through the crowds as Reign does, it would make those seats even more of a prime spot than they already are.
Dean Ambrose: During his last feud with Seth Rollins, the WWE teased the possibility of The Lunatic Fringe winning the belt. Looking at Ambrose and the current path he’s on, I could very much see him with a title reign sometime down the road. However I feel now is not the right time for him to win that title. Perhaps another US Title reign, where that tittle is getting popular would be a nice pit-stop along the way to a WWE Title reign.
I could go on to talk about other potential wrestlers such as Cesaro, or even Dolph Ziggler. However I honestly fear that their time may never come. Whether it be blame on bad timing, or the politics in the back, there were great wrestlers in the past who never got that opportunity.
