Kota Ibushi has been absent from in-ring competition since October 2021, when he had a match with Kazuchika Okada in the finals of the 31st annual NJPW G1 Climax Tournament. He suffered a shoulder injury at the time.

During his time away from the ring, he made several tweets airing his frustrations with NJPW. The belief is that he’s unlikely to return to New Japan even after his injury is healed.

Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter provided an update on Ibushi’s injury status. He wrote,

“Kota Ibushi has been in light training in the ring of late and thus far the shoulder has held up well so that’s a good sign. His New Japan contract expires at the end of January.”
