Sasha Banks Explains Why She Requested WWE Release In 2019

Sasha Banks has said that a serious bout of depression led her to requesting her release from WWE in 2019.

That year, Banks requested to be let go following WrestleMania 35, after a reported incident backstage at the show.

On the card, Banks and Bayley lost the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships to The IIconics in a fatal four-way tag-team match.

Speaking with The Athletic, Sasha recalled that a separated shoulder and depression forced her to request to be let go:

”I had a Make-A-Wish the next day and I couldn’t move, couldn’t put my clothes on, couldn’t do my hair. Bayley had to come into my room and do that. I didn’t want to tell anybody. Those titles meant so much to me.”

I felt so sad every day and I didn’t know why. I had to take myself away from a situation and such a fast world where I had to stop and realize who Mercedes was and who Sasha Banks was. I had no time off. I never got to see myself, my family. I took that time to figure out what I loved besides wrestling.”

Vince McMahon rejected the request and Banks would return later that year on Raw.
The Boss will team with Naomi to challenge for the Women’s Tag Team Championships this weekend at WrestleMania 38.
