It was announced on Monday afternoon that WWE decided to drop the “Crews” from Apollo Crews’ name. Now he is simply referred to on WWE TV as Apollo. He joins names such as Cesaro and Rusev who have also had parts of their original names removed. There has been some speculation online that WWE made this move to remove any sort of affiliation with last week’s Florida high school shooter Nikolas Cruz.
Cruz opened fire on his former high school and killed 17 people, including both students and faculty. Sportskeeda reports that they received an email from WWE saying that this was indeed why they made the change:
Apparently this is the reason why Apollo Crews is now "Apollo".

Ryan Satin of Pro Wrestling Sheet reports that WWE PR is denying sending out any sort of email on the matter:
WWE PR is claiming they didn't send out any email saying this, so I'm confused. https://t.co/7ambaWxArx
