Fighting With My Family may have never seen the silver screen as the project was nearly canceled due to Saraya’s substance abuse problems.
The film, detailing the life of the British wrestler and her journey to WWE, stars Florence Pugh as Saraya with appearances from Vince Vaughn, Stephen Merchant, and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson.
Speaking on Talk is Jericho, Saraya explained how her real-life issues nearly caused the project to be canned.
“It was gonna be stopped at one point because of me doing drugs and just being an absolute chaotic psychopath. It was not good press at all, and I was just like, completely crazy.
“At one point they were scared that I was gonna die, first of all, but also they were just like, ‘This movie is just bad timing because she’s just not getting any better’ … I think it was [Mark] Carrano that reached out to me, and he was just like, ‘You need to get it together.’ He was like, ‘There’s gonna be a lot of things that are just gonna be thrown away.”
The film, which concludes with Saraya’s Divas Championship win on the post-WrestleMania 30 episode of RAW, was released in February 2019 and boasts a 93% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes.
