Author’s POV, Running Commentary & Thoughts:

Zero Hour Pre-Show

• We’re immediately starting off with Ruby Soho and Ortiz going after Tay Melo and Sammy Guevara backstage. That’s leading into the AAA World Mixed Tag Team Championship match.
• Just a thought, but if your pre-show is 4 matches long, maybe it isn’t a pre-show and you just have a legitimate 5 hour long event.
• Soho is being helped away from ringside, covering her nose. Maybe she took a straight shot and either suffered a broken nose or got busted open pretty badly. That pinfall finish was pretty awkward and she didn’t stop holding her nose.
• Next up is Hook. He’s likely to retain in relatively short fashion.
• It actually was a longer match than I thought it would be. Parker tapped out and Matt Menard immediately attacked Hook after the bell. Hook got some help from Action Bronson.
• Third match for the pre-show is for the All-Atlantic title.
• After a back-and-forth match, Pac retains by pinfall.
• Orange Cassidy then came out to interrupt Pac’s interview with Tony Schiavone. Pac says no. “You are not a wrestler; you are a joke. Get to the back of the line.” Meanwhile, Sabian is in the ring, yelling at his cardboard box that he was wearing on his head.
• Time for Kingston and Ishii to chop each other for 10 minutes.
• A few minutes later, there hasn’t been all that much more than those chops for me to talk about.
• Kingston scores the victory by pinfall.

Casino Ladder Match

• We’re starting off with Wheeler Yuta and Rey Fenix.
• Next up is Rush el Toro Blanco.
• Third is Andrade El Idolo, who immediately works with Rush. Instead of either of them climbing the ladder, they set up a few ladders for some spots. One of those is Yuta being powerbombed.
• Claudio Castagnoli to the rescue.
• Two ladders are hooked together and Claudio is just pushing Andrade out of the ring from that. I don’t really understand what they were going for there. It looked cool at first, though.
• The next entrant is Dante Martin.
• Good spot with Claudio accidentally tossing Dante up to the ladder.
• Penta El Zero Miedo is next. He had more pyro in his entrance than WWE used for the entirety of Clash at the Castle.
• Canadian Destroyer (Penta to Andrade) on the ladder, followed by Fenix splashing Rush through a table.
• Claudio, Dante and Wheeler were all climbing and some random masked people went into the ring and attacked them. One of the masked guys took off the chip and revealed himself to be Stokely Hathaway. The masked guys are Ethan Page, Austin Gunn, Colten Gunn, W. Morrissey, Lee Moriarty.
• The Joker entrant is…someone masked. He heads to the ring and Hathaway just hands him the chip. He wins. Whoever he is.
• The Joker decides not to take his mask off and just leaves.
• So are you in the “that was obviously MJF” camp, or thinking it was someone else, or thinking “that was stupid and I don’t care”?

AEW World Trios Championship Match

• Does anyone want to keep track of the amount of times someone says “they know each other very well”?
• Solid back and forth action.
• Notable moment when Nick Jackson did a Buckshot Lariat to Adam Page. It didn’t get them the win, but it made people pop.
• Two very close near-falls with John Silver doing roll-ups and nearly getting Omega.
• Omega scores the pin on Silver after Page accidentally hits a Buckshot Lariat on him.

AEW TBS Championship Match

• Should I write “Jade Cargill won by pinfall” already, or give it until at least after the entrances?
• Athena’s got on some retractable metal wings with lights on them, some skulls, an LED string. Meanwhile, Cargill is wearing a She-Hulk inspired outfit and busted through some bricks.
• Kiera Hogan and Leila Grey were a little late on pulling Cargill’s leg. That was just a split second away from a three-count, and only because the referee knew to stall momentarily.
• It was kept relatively short, as per usual, and Cargill gets the win, as per usual.

Did you know that Jon Moxley is fighting all of Chicago tonight, including the teacher of the year and someone who serves coffee? Apparently, this is a sentimental handicap match.

Trios Match: FTR and Wardlow vs. Jay Lethal and Motor City Machine Guns

• I like the sign in the crowd referring to Wardlow and FTR as FTWAR.
• Who else wishes MCMG would sign with AEW full time?
• Leave a comment. Who is going to end up being the bigger bust investment between Satnam Singh and Anthony Ogogo?
• “Satnam’s got hands the size of cash registers. I don’t think they even have cash registers anymore.” Taz on commentary is always something to pay attention to.
• Four powerbombs to Jay Lethal and Wardlow scores the win.
• Samoa Joe comes out after the match to toss Sonjay Dutt into the ring and help FTR and Wardlow.
• Then, Dax Harwood’s daughter comes to the ring. She breaks his pencil (ha!) and after they lay out Dutt, she puts one foot on him and the referee counts a pinfall. There’s a highlight for sure.

Ricky Starks vs. Powerhouse Hobbs

• Oh. Wow. Okay. I still hadn’t bothered to even type out anything and the match is over. This wasn’t a 30-second squash, but that felt like it was just starting to get, well, started. Hobbs winning felt like it came kind of out of nowhere there.

AEW World Tag Team Championship Match

• Good rap from Max Caster. That’s always one of the high points.
• ♫ Ooooh scissor me daddy ♫ chants to Seven Nation Army. Chant of the night?
• “We want scissors” is another chant. Jim Ross says that’s reminiscent of when “years ago” they would chant “we want tables.” As if that isn’t still chanted in every No Disqualification match, including this weekend.
• Lee accidentally pounced Strickland. The Acclaimed got a close near-fall on that one. All throughout this match, the crowd’s been pro-Acclaimed.
• Bowens and Caster superplexed Lee. Strickland capitalized with a stomp. The crowd popped huge for Bowens kicking out.
• They keep telling the story of Bowens’ knee. That’s probably leading to the finale.
• Caster is able to give Lee a fireman’s carry slam!!
• “Bullshit” chants from the crowd after another near-fall is broken up and The Acclaimed still haven’t won.
• Bowens collapsed from his knee giving out, leading to Swerve accidentally kicking Lee. Another close two-count. This crowd is BEGGING for The Acclaimed to win.
• After a stomp and powerbomb combo, Swerve in Our Glory retain.
• Hell of a match. The best one so far, for my tastes.

Interim Women’s World Championship Match

• It’s going to be hard to follow that match. Here’s hoping these four pull it off.
• Shida stumbled on her kip up. Just an observation. Not some “the match is ruined now” criticism.
• Shida’s being taken out of the match after a double-team from Baker and Hayter.
• A few minutes later, Shida’s back, with two kendo sticks. In typical “wrestling doesn’t make sense” logic, she nails Baker and Hayter two or three times and then tosses the weapons aside, rather than continuing to use them and just make sure she wins the match.
• The crowd’s hottest moment in this match has arguably been the breakdown of Hayter and Baker. Even more so than Storm getting the win (which she did over Hayter).

Christian Cage vs. Jungle Boy

• Luchasaurus came out of the heel tunnel. He then slammed Jungle Boy into part of the stage and followed that up with putting Jungle Boy through a table.
• A spear and a Kill Switch later and the match is over in just a few seconds.
• Yup. This is one of those moments where I’m going to crap on this. This was arguably the top match I was excited to see and they copped out and made it a squash. Maybe don’t book FIFTEEN matches where you need to rush some of them like this and just go “gotcha!” Incredibly lame.

Bryan Danielson vs. “Lionheart” Chris Jericho

• I like the Lionheart ring gear and entrance and all. Nice touch.
• That last segment soured me on the beginning of this. Bad placement. Now, Jericho and Danielson need to do even more to turn my mood around, which isn’t how I was hoping to go into their match, of course.
• Jericho’s tights don’t fit. He’s wrestling this entire match just shy of a wedgie and an ass flash.
• These two know what they’re doing, so of course this is a good match. But I’m definitely feeling burned out.
• So after the previous match being booked to just be a non-match to extend a story, this match, which had a built-in setup for Daniel Garcia to get involved, just ends with a clean victory from Jericho? No, I don’t think AEW is infallible. I don’t get some of these decisions. This ending felt flat. I get the whole low-blow cheating to win thing pushes Garcia to disapprove, but that doesn’t feel strong enough for my tastes. Disagree? Leave a comment arguing your point of view (without being an ass about it and just saying “you’re wrong” as that’s not a convincing argument.)

Miro, Darby Allin and Sting vs. House of Black

• This was a match I didn’t care about. Let’s see if they manage to find a way to turn my souring mood around. I doubt it.
• I’ve got nothing to say about anything going on.
• Malakai Black is bleeding from somewhere around his eye. I’m not sure what sparked that.
• Sting sprays some mist in the eyes of Black as some payback. That allows Allin to twist Black up for a pin.
• Miro is staying on the stage away from Sting and Allin. What’s with the separation? Did I miss the rationality behind Miro walking up to the top of the stage before Sting even sprayed the mist?

Tony Schiavone tries to talk to Daniel Garcia. Chris Jericho immediately interrupts to ask where Garcia was. Garcia reiterates that he shouldn’t have cheated to win, so Jericho let him down. Jericho says The Jericho Appreciation Society isn’t backing him up against Wheeler Yuta. Garcia needs him to support him, but Jericho is adamant he needs to beat Yuta without The JAS.

AEW World Championship Match

• Give me something to talk about.
• Moxley’s not the first one bleeding. That’s a surprise.
• He did lick Punk’s blood off his hands, though. So…that’s a thing.
• I’m just waiting for MJF I mean, The Joker, to cash in that chip and win the title instead of CM Punk.
• It’s a good thing that crowd is supporting Punk, since that’s keeping his injury from being an injury even though two weeks ago, he could only last a few seconds with Moxley. #SuspensionOfDisbelief
• After two GTS, Punk gets the win.
• Lots of people will gush over this. I thought it was good, but again, not my Match of the Year choice. I’m sure I would have enjoyed it more if I wasn’t so burned out, too. That’s not on Punk or Moxley, but on Khan for overbooking this event. It’s 11:53pm and I’ve been watching wrestling nearly two days straight.
• The lights have gone out. Is it time for the joker?
• Audio pops up with Khan talking about how he’s got one final offer for MJF for the sake of the fans.
• The Joker pops up on screen to take his mask off to confirm it is MJF. “I am the devil himself.”
• Out comes MJF. Are we getting a Money in the Bank style cash-in? I sure hope so.
• Nope. MJF just taunts that he’s going for the title and we’re told that we’ll find out more about this on Dynamite. That’s it. Womp womp.
