Author’s POV, Running Commentary & Thoughts:
Intro
- The whole “angry street hoodlums grunge” aesthetic isn’t my thing.
- Most of these guys in the intro seem so bland. Sorry, but you’re not catching my attention if you’re just “Elijah”.
- Man Like Dereiss has some energy to him, at least.
- This Roy Johnson guy hosting the show is very flat and boring.
Gene Munny vs. Spike Trivet vs. Omari vs. Chris Ridgeway
- Not knowing anything about anyone on this card at all, minus having seen a few Millie McKenzie matches, I’m rooting for either Trivet or Omari based just on their entrances.
- Anyone else really hate that we’re in an era where so much wrestling takes place inside empty warehouses with no crowds? Obviously, it’s a necessity and not a choice, but once this pandemic is under control and fans can return, I hope nobody EVER decides to keep that atmosphere going. It’s terrible.
- No thoughts on the match itself. Just a match with no standout stuff. I hope that’s not the way the rest of this goes.
Man Like Dereiss vs. Luke Jacobs
- Hey, look at that. The guy who looked like he had more personality in the intro has a rap entrance, which shows off more personality. Admittedly, it’s awkward when he is saying “when I say, you say” with no one there. But hey, so far, I’m rooting for this guy to win.
- Luke Jacobs looks like the type of guy that would catch WWE’s attention for his size and they’d say they could mold him into a Superstar in the Performance Center.
- Oh man. Here we go with another match that I have nothing to comment about. I’m sorry, but I have nothing to say unless you want to hear about how the apple I just ate was pretty good. McIntosh, by the way. And no, I’m a PC guy, not an Apple/Mac guy.
- Both these guys look like they have some raw potential, but it’s still very raw. And before you call me out and say “You couldn’t do any better”, I fully agree. I’ve never and will never be a wrestler and even Giant Gonzalez is better than I’d ever be.
- Luke Jacobs won? Surprised about that, to be honest.
Kid Lykos II vs. Ethan Allen
- I really hope the commentary team tosses out a bunch of furniture jokes regarding Ethan Allen. Stuff like him being made out of quality craftsmanship and “everything must go!”
- Ugh. Of course “he calls that the Allen Slam.” Why do people do that? Don’t just do a move and call your finisher your name and then the move. Baron Corbin does the End of Days and the Deep Six, not the “Corbin Slam.”
- “When you go up that high…the pressure is really on…cause you could either climb down…or you…you could…come down the hard way.” Ugh. The commentary.
- “Look behind Ethan Allen. That’s the floor.” Yes it is. Can we get a shot of that floor? I’m sure it’s mesmerizing.
- The most interesting moment by far is Lykos biting the ropes to break a submission since his arms and legs are locked up.
“We’ve been back to back to back with bangers here.” Did you air them? I didn’t see them.
Millie McKenzie vs. Mercedez Blaze
- Why is this called a Thunderbastard? Fill me in.
- McKenzie and Blaze carry themselves as bigger stars than most of the people I’ve seen so far.
- I get a feeling McKenzie is winning this based on the idea she’s been signed to NXT UK. Blaze doesn’t seem bad, though. Maybe she should be signed, too.
- Yup. McKenzie for the win. Not much to talk about match-wise. Running theme.
Jordan Breaks is coming.
Elijah vs. Danny Black
- So Danny Black is a Daredevil fan. I wonder if he has a yellow variant of this gear.
- “This. Is. Elijah!” Well I. Am. Underwhelmed! For the record, I think that way about all one-name type deals like this if it’s a first name. I don’t like “Elias” in WWE, either. To me, just having someone named “Daniel” or whatever isn’t the slightest bit interesting.
- Elijah’s got a good physique going, at least. That’s a benefit.
- In an era where there aren’t many characters and everyone’s just “guy who can wrestle” (or worse, “guy who claims he can wrestle but isn’t anything worth watching in the ring”) you have to do something to make yourself memorable. Everyone does a tope, a superkick, etc. Show me something else.
- Dereiss failed to beat the bigger guy. Lykos II failed to overcome the bigger guy. Black scored the upset, though…only to be taken out by Elijah afterward. Curious what it is about Black that got the nod.
Warren Banks vs. Big Guns Joe
- Warren Banks is the guy that I’ve been the most interested in seeing. I really hope he doesn’t disappoint.
- Big Guns Joe weighs in at 76,500 grams. That made me chuckle.
- “This really is a clash of the titans.” For a guy named Big Guns Joe, he looks so small compared to Warren Banks. Working the gimmick and making Banks look like he should be signed right out of the gate.
- Yup. Sign Warren Banks. He seems the most polished and worthwhile investment by far.
Chuck Mambo vs. Kid Lykos
- Do I go with a Mambo Italiano joke or Mambo No. 5?
- So I gather these two are the veterans who have made careers in PROGRESS, right?
- I could imagine either of these guys popping up on AEW Dark. Easily.
- Wait. Kid Lykos and Kid Lykos II are heels? Oh, I guess this was a heel turn. Okay.
No idea who Cara Noir is, but at least this video package makes it seem like he’s a big deal in comparison to everyone else. Not bad.
PROGRESS Unified World Championship Match: Cara Noir (c) vs. Dan Moloney
- Oh good, Cara Noir comes out to Swan Lake! I was hoping that would happen. Now this guy’s got some character. He’s like a Goldust variant.
- Entrance alone, I say sign Cara Noir to NXT UK. Let’s see if he’s got the in-ring skills to match that.
- “Oh! On top of his head! He keeps his brain in there!” – Highlight of the show so far?
- I’m surprised Dan Moloney isn’t in NXT UK, too, for that matter. He seems like someone WWE would have wanted to pick up at some point. If they’ve got Tyson T-Bone and Jack Starz and whatnot, I’m curious why not Moloney.
- I’m glad Noir has a submission finish. That makes sense.
So my main takeaways from this show are:
- If WWE continues showing these, I probably won’t watch them.
- Cara Noir and Warren Banks, possibly Dan Moloney, possibly Man Like Dereiss, possibly Mercedez Blaze should be signed along with Millie McKenzie.
- They need a much better broadcast team.
- Warehouse shows are really hard to digest.
