Regarding John Cena having shoulder surgery today, The Wrestling Observer Newsletter notes that the injury is believed to be a torn rotator cuff or a torn labrum. It’s worth noting that Cena’s frequent training partner Cesaro is also out with a shoulder injury, and other WWE talents have suffered from similar injuries this past year.
Details are still sketchy on Cena’s condition but word is that he wanted to get the surgery done as soon as possible. Cena had been having shoulder issues but they were worsened while training.
The normal recovery time would be over 6 months, but Cena has been known to return sooner than expected in the past. Cena is expected to miss WrestleMania 32 but they should have a better idea on his return once he begins rehab.

This is a scary stat for WWE but every talent who left WrestleMania 31 as champion is currently out of action with an injury: then-United States Champion John Cena, then-Divas Champion Nikki Bella, then-Intercontinental Champion Daniel Bryan, then-WWE Tag Team Champions Cesaro and Tyson Kidd, and then-WWE World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins.
