AEW’s Colt Cabana has claimed that WWE was quick to look down on any talent from the indies who signed with the company during his time under contract.

In 2007, Cabana signed a deal with WWE and would make his main roster debut as Scotty Goldman in August 2008, but would lose all his matches.

On a recent edition of the “Developmentally Speaking” podcast, Cabana reflected on his WWE tenure and how his status as an ‘indie guy’ could have hurt his chances. He said,

“I kind of assumed like, ‘I don’t know how long I’ll be in WWE. I don’t look like Batista or any of these guys. I’m an indie guy.’ They were frowning at indie guys at that time. But [I thought] I’ll be gone a little bit.

“I’ll be able to get fresh for the independents if I come back, and while I’m doing that, I’ll make a paycheck and I’ll also be able to learn and just get around all of these wrestlers in this wrestling situation while I’m in developmental.”

WWE’s attitude toward ‘indie guys’ has clearly changed, with top names including Seth Rollins, Sami Zayn, and Kevin Owens all making themselves known on the independents.
