Rey Mysterio is your new WWE United States Champion.
On Friday night’s episode of WWE SmackDown, Santos Escobar wound up being attacked by Austin Theory in a backstage segment. The two men were originally set to face off for the title.
Due to the attack angle, Mysterio subbed in for his fellow lWo faction member and wound up defeating Theory to win the title. While Escobar wound up being cleared and said he wanted to continue on with the match, Theory once again attacked him as he was making his way to the ring.
Theory proceeded to tell the fans that they didn’t deserve to see him wrestle, but Escobar insisted that Mysterio take his place in the match. This brought out Adam Pearce, who made the match official.
This is Mysterio’s third run with the US Championship. Theory’s second reign with the title comes to an end at 258 days.
