Why Are Heels Cowards?

I was watching the final hype between the Brock Lesnar/Big Show match for the Royal Rumble and what I saw has been a recurring theme in WWE for a long time now. Brock Lesnar, with a chair, refused to step in the ring with Big Show. Every single heel is either a coward, or afraid to fight. Let me address this issue.

I’m not sure if WWE creative suffers from a severe case of short-term amnesia, but I remember when Brock Lesnar superplexed Big Show off the top rope and broke the ring. I remember when Brock Lesnar brought in a bulldozer and dominated Lesnar. Here’s the thing though. He was a face. He was a face who wouldn’t stand down to any challenge and fight to the bitter end. But when he’s a heel, he turns into a coward. Why? What happened that made him lose his confidence? Shouldn’t heels be regarded as dangerous and threats as opposed to making a sneaky attack?

Personally, for me, WWE needs to cease this booking. The top two heels in WWE right now, in my opinion was embarassed on RAW. Big Show punked out Lesnar. Orton was seen escaping into a car to run away from John Cena. It is really hard to wrap my head around why they make their heels seem so weak. We know they can go and pick up the win in the actual match. But in terms of the build-up, they need to be perceived as more threats. When a face calls them out from the back, the heel should feel insulted and make the face feel his wrath. I get the typical heel tactics. Cheating to win, jumping a guy with a couple of other people, attacks from behind. I have no problem with those. But I have seen all too often a face and a heel in the same ring, and the face challenges a heel to fight. Then the heel steps out of the ring and goes away. Why don’t they just get it on? What does that say about the heel? He’s getting punked out! He’s not so tough now is he?

For me, this is the type of thing that ruins the credibility for some of the heels. They have to show at least some fight. Even if they lose the scuffle against the face, show that they are going to go down swinging instead of being a coward and taking the easy way out. I think this supposed “strategy” of WWE creative needs to stop now. I can’t help but feel that if this trend of cowardly heels continue, we may not believe what these people can truly do in years to come.
