Author’s POV, Running Commentary & Thoughts:
Zero Hour
- In typical fashion, a bunch of matches were just added to the card that weren’t even on the lineup when I last checked at around 11pm. So I’ve entirely missed Jeff Cobb beating Mascara Dorada as I’ve been typing out all this extra info for the lineup.
- Parker and Menard beat Cheeseburger and Isom by pinfall. I never realized how catchy their theme is. Classic 80s feel to it.
- Willow Nightingale is definitely a future ROH women’s champion in the midst of her push. I’m not sold on Trish Adora by any means, though.
- Dante Martin missed the ropes for a springboard to the outside. Thankfully, he caught himself and didn’t fall face first.
- Maria is thrown out from ringside, leading to Top Flight scoring a pinfall. Nice finish.
- Surprisingly, The Kingdom shook Top Flight’s hands after the match.
Tag Team Match: A.R. Fox and Blake Christian vs. La Facción Ingobernable (Dralístico and Rush)
- I’m assuming Dralistico and Rush win this, but since it is one of the many matches that mean zilch, it could easily just be on the card to highlight AR Fox.
- AR Fox hit a 450 splash on Dralistico for the pin, but it could possibly be a mistake. Not only was the reaction off and Dralistico tried to kick out, but a moment beforehand, Blake Christian nearly nailed the ref in the head with a knee.
- Post-match, Dralistico and Rush beat down Fox and Christian.
ROH Women’s World Championship Match
- The promo aired twice before this involved Athena talking about how people booing her caused her tougher persona. As soon as she comes out, she gets cheered and the commentary team talk about how everyone in the arena wants her to win. Gotta love when that happens, right?
- I had forgotten Athena is from Texas. Now, even more so, I’m sure she’s going to win the belt here.
- Code of Honor, for anyone wondering. Even though Athena was seemingly talking trash during the handshake.
- Athena eventually rips off one of the turnbuckle pads. Martinez gets dropkicked where the back of her head hits the exposed part.
- That leads to Athena’s finish for the win. By pinfall, you’ve got a new champion.
Tag Team Match: Swerve in Our Glory vs. Shane Taylor Promotions
- “We want Shane” chants to see him against Keith Lee. Griffey obliges by tagging out. But Swerve tags himself in to get some heat.
- Swerve and Lee are still having issues. But, surprise! They win! So this “inevitable split” that has happened from the start of them teaming is still just being dragged out. I don’t see the point.
- Since they didn’t do anything to tell the story of Shane Taylor having history with Keith Lee, and you’re just expected to do your homework and know that ahead of time by following the promotion for the years prior to Lee even being in NXT, this match meant nothing to me beyond that split of Swerve in Our Glory, which didn’t even happen.
ROH World Six-Man Tag Team Championship Match
- Why does Dalton Castle sound like he’s trying to do an impression of Chucky?
- I’m hoping this is a squash that is over in 60 seconds or less with The Embassy winning the titles.
- Viking Raider Ivar—I mean Toa Liona—and Brian Cage alone should have destroyed these three guys by now. With Kaun, this is even more of a one-sided affair.
- Well The Boys didn’t get up on Toa’s shoulders properly for that double Samoan Drop.
- Why is Castle more concerned with just walking around ringside instead of being anywhere close to tagging range for his partner being triple-teamed?
- Finally, new champions are crowned. This was far too competitive from what it should have been.
Top Flight was interviewed by Lexy Nair. Angelo Parker and Matt Menard interrupted. This led to a brawl that spilled out into the ringside area. Parker gets a microphone to ask “If Ring of Honor was so great, why did it die in the first place?” Chris Jericho is the one man who can resurrect it. Do you want to know what makes Daddy Magic’s nipples hard? Menard pulls out a purple hat to say Claudio Castagnoli is going to end up teaming with Jake Hager as a new tag team called The Hat Trick, and Daniel Garcia is going to beat Wheeler Yuta. Yuta comes out and 2point0 walks off.
ROH Pure Championship Match
- The judges for this match are Christopher Daniels, BJ Whitmer and Jerry Lynn.
- Trent Seven is ringside. I’m assuming he might get signed as part of ROH if WWE doesn’t get him back in time for NXT Europe.
- Yuta has lost all of his rope breaks. Garcia hasn’t lost any of them.
- Yuta actually won the match by referee stoppage after a constant barrage of elbows. New champion. I’m surprised.
- Apparently this was history with the first ever two-time champion and the retaining streak of Pure champions for Final Battle?
- Garcia gave the belt to Yuta in a reserved sign of respect, storming out of the ring.
Double Dog Collar Match for the ROH World Tag Team Championship
- Commentary makes a good point. You might call Bret Hart a better wrestler, but in a fight like this, you’d pick Terry Funk to win. The same applies to FTR as the better wrestlers, but The Briscoes as the better fighters.
- Not too long into this match and we’ve already got blood. This is a brawl as it should be.
- The chains on the dog collars are long enough that it lets Cash Wheeler be outside the ring on the opposite side of The Briscoes double-teaming Dax Harwood.
- Dax wrapping the chain around his head for a headbutt was ridiculous.
- Referee Mike Posey is down after Briscoe pulled him in the direction of Harwood’s strike. Posey’s busted open and Paul Turner is now checking on him.
- Wheeler uses the chain to pull Mark off the ring post so he can crash down into a pile of chairs on the outside.
- Low blow, piledriver, Harwood only has his legs barely on Jay for a two-count.
- Harwood passes out and we have new tag team champions.
- Hell of a match. Easily better than everything before it combined.
The Gunn Club attacked FTR after the match. Austin Gunn grabbed a mic to say FTR’s legacy is dying and they won’t stop until they’re the ones who kill it. The Briscoes then ran the Gunns off. Harwood then got a mic to say what I think was “our mission is to beat your ass” to The Gunn Club, but the mic only picked up part of it.
ROH World Television Championship Match
- “The wifi and nachos suck” is my favorite sign of the night.
- Even match-up so far. I’m still expecting Wardlow to interfere and cost Joe the title, despite how all these belts have been changing hands.
- Well, I guess I was wrong. Joe retained his title by pinfall after a Muscle Buster. That felt like a near guarantee for me in order to push the story forward, keep Robinson in a prominent spot and, you know, make this random match mean something more than just “guy against guy because why not?”
- But hey, the match was fine.
ROH World Championship Match
- Not too much to talk about yet here. They’re just having a solid match, but nothing special.
- I like the crowd chanting “ocho” instead of “eight” during a potential count-out.
- Parker and Menard interfered, but Castagnoli was able to kick out. The referee then tossed Parker and Menard out from ringside.
- Claudio wins back the title after spinning Jericho 33 times. Whaaaat?! That’s not at all how I expected this match to end. I’ll take it, though. That was funny.
