Author’s POV, Running Commentary & Thoughts:

Zero Hour

  • We’re starting off with Cobb against Williams, which Cobb won by pinfall.
  • Nigel McGuinness has joined the commentary team! Nice!
  • Next match is Konosuke Takeshita against Willie Mack. We can assume Takeshita will win this. Let’s see.
  • We would be right. Takeshita gets the win, but Mack doesn’t look like a slouch in the fight.
  • Time for Willow Nightingale to beat Miranda Alize. And she does, with an emphatic pounce followed by a powerbomb.
  • Next up is Stu Grayson against Slim J. I’m banking on Grayson winning this, naturally. And he does.
  • Dutch and Vincent appear for a stare down with Grayson and Evil Uno.
  • That is your Zero Hour pre-show in the books. Time for the main card to start.

Note: As this is now happening at the same time as SmackDown, my attention will be split. Apologies in advance for not providing too many live-running thoughts. I’ll toss in my comments as many times as I can from what I notice.

AAA Mega Championship Match: El Hijo del Vikingo (c) vs. Komander

  • This was a great match, from what I could see (about 75% of it). My favorite moment of the whole thing was Komander running along the ring ropes and jumping to the next side for a springboard.
  • Both of these guys are super fun to watch. I’ll be looking forward to their futures.

ROH World Six-Man Tag Team Championship Match: The Embassy (c) vs. AR Fox, Blake Christian and Metalik

  • I didn’t see much of this match, but what I did see wasn’t particularly thrilling me. It just seemed like a generic match with a series of dropkicks and such.
  • I’m curious about Brian Cage not only retaining, but getting the pin. Maybe that’s a sign he’s sticking around and signing a new contract.

ROH Women’s World Championship Match: Athena (c) vs. Yuka Sakazaki

  • As someone who hasn’t been watching ROH television episodes, or AEW Dark, has Athena been regularly doing this whole “stomping on a doll” entrance gimmick, or is this something specific to this feud? One constant that has happened throughout her career (as well as her time as Ember Moon) is that I’ve never quite understood what her gimmicks are supposed to be, as they never go full-force on any of them. She just always comes off to me as “some vague idea of an alt chick, voodoo priestess, werewolf, something or other.”
  • The champion retains by pinfall.

ROH World Television Championship Match: Samoa Joe (c) vs. Mark Briscoe

  • Very solid match so far. Joe is always great, and Briscoe is holding his own in singles competition to come off like he’s on the same level. Thumbs up, for sure.
  • Joe’s got a bloody nose. I missed what caused that.
  • WOW. I did not expect Samoa Joe to retain here. Least of all, for him to win by submission via referee stoppage.
  • After the match, Joe shakes Mark’s hand. But still, that was a shocking win in my book.
  • Now, I’m starting to think Claudio Castagnoli will retain so that Mark Briscoe can beat him. We’ll see in the main event.
  • HEY! VLADIMIR IS IN THE CROWD!!

Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Daniel Garcia

  • I still think they missed the mark of having Daniel Garcia turn babyface and dethrone Chris Jericho for the ROH title. Seeing this match here against Tanahashi is reiterating that. Garcia’s really good and could definitely hold his own as the top champion of this brand.
  • Tanahashi winning makes sense. Keep him at the top of the top. A win for Garcia would have meant something, for sure, but since this had absolutely zero build to it and no story, it wouldn’t have the same impact.

Reach for the Sky Ladder Match for the Vacated ROH World Tag Team Championship

  • Sloppy spot with Mark Davis just standing there while Kyle Fletcher pretended like he couldn’t reach the belts, waiting for someone to come over and barely tap him so he could climb down. Poor timing made that look so ridiculous.
  • Dante Martin did a much better job of pretending like he had to adjust his footing a couple minutes later in a similar spot. Just an observation.
  • Here we go again, with Aussie Open’s Davis “stabilizing the ladder” and just watching someone kick Kyle Fletcher off. Come on, guys. Pretend like you want to win this match.
  • The commentary team’s equipment got wiped out for a bit there.
  • Dralistico crashes through a ladder, which doesn’t 100% break, but good enough.
  • Nice spot with Penta and Dante Martin demolishing a table. But oh my god. Dante’s ankle! Aaaaaaaaah that’s awful. He’s going to be out of action for a while.
  • Fenix grabs the belts and The Lucha Bros are your new champions.
  • FTR and Mark Briscoe celebrate with The Lucha Bros.

ROH Pure Championship Match: Wheeler Yuta (c) vs. Katsuyori Shibata

  • Pat Buck, Madison Rayne and Christopher Daniels are your judges for this contest.
  • Yuta’s first rope break is down at around the 5 minute mark.
  • Pure Rules matches aren’t my personal favorite style, and I have no connection to Shibata, so I’ve honestly been more interested in the WWE Hall of Fame ceremony that is going on right now, rather than this. But out of my peripheral vision, it seems like I would have very little to say when it’s just a series of strikes and holds and all. This isn’t a play-by-play list of moves.
  • Yuta eats up his second rope break at 11 minutes.
  • Oh wow, Shibata won the belt by pinfall. I wasn’t expecting that.

ROH World Championship Match: Claudio Castagnoli (c) vs. Eddie Kingston

  • Nice touch with this super quickly turning into Kingston wanting to get a chair. Very illustrative of their animosity.
  • I thought Kingston had the win with his back-fist.
  • There’s been a few counters that were a little sloppy throughout this match.
  • Big pop for Kingston kicking out of the Neutralizer and an uppercut.
  • Booooo. Castagnoli retains by pinfall from a reversal. Very good match.
