Author’s POV, Running Commentary & Thoughts:

Pre-Show and Tag Team Match

  • So I timed it out. Last night, we were on a several minute delay. The same is going on here, too. Twitch was over 2 minutes ahead of the Peacock feed. That’s great, going forward, knowing that we’ll perpetually be 2 minutes behind everyone else in the world just because we’re watching on Peacock.
  • Again, I’m a big fan of seeing Mickie James back on my screen, in more ways than one.
  • I think Arash Markazi needs to mute some of his notifications.
  • Two pre-shows in a row, Jimmy Smith is doing great. I dig the analysis of “you can climb a ladder with one arm, but not with one leg” and that the key to that match is working on the opponent’s leg. Bring this guy back, for sure. If he’s down for it, I say make him a go-to analyst on these pre-shows going forward.
  • So this tag team match is a No. 1 contender’s match? Okay. Now, it matters more. Good call.
  • Breezango coming out dressed as pirates is perfect. These guys are always having fun. All the more reason to keep them around for as long as possible and never let them go.
  • For that matter, the same goes for Drake Maverick. I maintain that him retaining his job last year was one of the best moments of 2020. I want this guy to have a long enough run as a comedic character (and a legitimate cruiserweight and possibly tag team champion) to the point where he’s a future Hall of Famer.
  • Nice finish with Dain tossing Maverick on top of Fandango for the pin. I like when they play into that dynamic of this team.
  • Yeah….Poppy isn’t my thing. I don’t like musical performances on WWE shows as it is (minus when they perform someone to the ring) and anything too “look at me, I’m different” like this, especially with yelling instead of singing, just isn’t my vibe.

NXT Cruiserweight Championship Ladder Match

  • New music for Santos Escobar. I don’t like it as much, but it’s okay.
  • I’m rooting for Santos. How about you? Drop a comment below.
  • It wasn’t planned, but I liked the dropkick into the ladder, making it bounce from the top, middle and bottom ropes down to land on top of Devlin. That was fun.
  • Hell of a moonsault from Devlin off the ladder. Very nice!
  • I don’t blame Escobar for having Mendoza and Wilde help him. It’s No DQ. That’s just being an opportunist. With the way this is going, though, I don’t think that’s going to be the end of the match quite yet.
  • Oooooh Devlin falling backward into a ladder was good, too.
  • Woo! Escobar for the win!
  • Neat little moment with Escobar’s son holding up the other championship.

NXT Women’s Tag Team Championship Match

  • Was there another 3-count played off as a 2-count again here like what happened last night? I would go back and double check, but, you know, there’s no rewind function on Peacock…so….
  • Ember doing the DX “suck it” during a match? Why?
  • Oh God. Shotzi completely landed bad on that suicide dive. I feel like I say this almost every week, but people need to stop doing that move as often. Not only is it dangerous, but it’s not even impressive anymore, so it’s not worth it!
  • Boooooo. Candice LeRae just cannot win a championship.

NXT North American Championship Match

  • Cool gear from Gargano. He’s always reliable in that way just like you can bet he’ll be great in the ring.
  • I’m not loving this match as much as I was hoping I would. There have been a few times I’ve caught myself drifting away and not paying attention.
  • One of the problems with a match like this, in my mind, is that Gargano should be the babyface fighting from underneath, rather than Reed having to be the more powerful one who isn’t in control. It’s harder to suspend your disbelief and get into it. At least, it is for me.
  • Not the best camera angle to cut to for Reed’s dive to the outside.
  • Nice moonsault attempt from Reed, though.
  • While I’m disappointed in a sense that Reed didn’t win the belt, I’m happier that Gargano retained it.

NXT Championship Match

  • For a second there, I thought Finn Balor was getting a new entrance and that it would lead to something cool. For it to just be a slideshow that went into his normal entrance was a let down.
  • Since Kross has some of Balor’s red paint on his face, I’m betting so many people are going to have moments where they think Kross is bleeding.
  • I expected this to be much more of a squash. At the very least, more in Kross’s favor. This has been much more about Balor being in charge, which is a refreshing change of pace and a surprise.
  • I like the idea of Balor putting up this much of a fight for a match he was going to lose. It shows that Kross can actually wrestle more than a squash and that Balor hasn’t lost credibility in the process.

Unsanctioned Match: Adam Cole vs. Kyle O’Reilly

  • It’s a little weird seeing O’Reilly playing air guitar when he doesn’t have a title belt. Hopefully, he gets some new music that isn’t as generic, too.
  • Massive downgrade for Adam Cole’s music. Not only is it not as catchy, it’s also seemingly much harder to work in the “boom” and “Adam Cole, baybay!” naturally.
  • “We want tables” from the crowd. That reminds me that I’m very curious what people will chant at WrestleMania. I’m hoping there aren’t just continuous “CM Punk” and “AEW” chants and such.
  • Okay, this chain’s going to lead to something good, isn’t it? You’ve got my full attention.
  • I want to see them hook the chain from one side of the ring to the other.
  • Cole is showing that he has all the tools to succeed here. (I had to make a joke once a toolbox came out.)
  • A good portion of the NXT fans in attendance are pro-Cole. It seems like he’ll just never be a heel to some fans, no matter what the storyline, even if he just gave O’Reilly a low blow.
  • Ha! I did enjoy the fans chanting “you deserve it” when Cole knocked out the referee.
  • Can you really just toss a chair at someone’s head? Chair shots to the head, even if they’re protected, aren’t allowed anymore, but that’s okay? Sometimes, the rules in WWE make no sense at all.
  • Well damn, going through part of the steel ramp was a moment I didn’t see coming. That was cool.
  • Big, big fan of O’Reilly just ever-so-slightly moving his shoulder up off the mat for that two-count. That was great.
  • Shining Wizard from O’Reilly? Okay. Ah, not the end of the match. Still okay!
  • Who twitched like a fish better, Cole or Mark Henry?
  • Very good match. It went on a little long, but it was fun as hell to watch along the way.
