Author’s POV, Running Commentary & Thoughts:
Most Clever 24/7 Pin of the Year = Drew Gulak
- Drew Gulak wins an award they never announced was going to be part of this, for when he dressed up as a member of the cleaning staff.
Male Superstar of the Year = Drew McIntyre
- No one else should have won this. This was an easy pick.
Ring Gear of the Year = The New Day
- Frankly, I’m surprised. I don’t disagree with the choice, though. The Gears of War stuff was intricate and the paint-by-numbers stuff was very different. I thought people would go with Sasha Banks, but hey, I’m not complaining.
Return of the Year = Edge
- There were no other choices. Look, MVP has done some amazing stuff, but his return was overshadowed by Edge’s. This was the best because it meant the most, was the most shocking and had something to it that the other ones just couldn’t have: legitimacy. This was a return beyond just waiting to inevitably come back. This was a journey and if you haven’t watched the WWE Network special about Edge from earlier this year, you need to check that out.
Musical Performance of the Year = Elias
- This wasn’t announced ahead of time, so there are no other nominees to compare it to. Elias even said there was no one else in the category.
Rivalry of the Year = Edge vs. Randy Orton
- This was my vote, but I thought people would go with Sasha Banks against Bayley. Glad to see I was wrong. Edge and Orton had the most passionate feud by far. I’m also a fan of Orton saying “you’re welcome” to Edge about it.
Female Superstar of the Year = Sasha Banks
- To be honest, I think it’s unfortunate Asuka could win as much as she won this year and still not win this. She’s held the tag titles twice, the Raw women’s title twice and won Money in the Bank. That’s more than Sasha Banks did. But hey, Banks would be my #2 pick and there’s no questioning she was the bigger priority as far as WWE Creative went. Asuka was an afterthought. So I don’t disagree with this choice, nor am I in the slightest bit surprised.
Breakout Star of the Year = The Street Profits
- These guys held the tag titles nearly the entire year and became triple crown tag team champions in the process. No one else who was nominated actually won anything other than Otis being HANDED the Money in the Bank briefcase. This was a no-question choice.
Social Media Superstar of the Year = Bayley
- I’m sure there must have been more entertaining people on social media, but I can’t speak to that. I don’t really track what people are doing on Twitter.
Trash Talkers of the Year = The Hurt Business and Lacey Evans
- I love The Hurt Business. Lacey Evans, on the other hand, I don’t remember having anything particularly impressive as far as trash-talking.
WWE Network Documentary of the Year = The Last Ride
- I’d have given this award to Edge’s documentary. This is a good #2, though.
Celebrity Appearance of the Year = Rob Gronkowski
- Sorry. Nope. That was a total bust.
Double-Cross of the Year = Bayley attacks Sasha Banks
- Makes sense, but what sucks about this is that it happened in front of nobody and it was 2 years too late. They dragged this shit out FOREVER and then got bit in the ass for waiting. Also, I wonder if this was given this award at the last minute to make sure it won after it doesn’t win Moment of the Year.
Referee of the Year = Charles Robinson
- John Cone was screwed. I demand a recount.
Moment of the Year = The Undertaker’s Final Farewell
- It’s really a shame this wasn’t what it should have been. COVID really screwed history out of a better retirement for The Undertaker.
Tag Team of the Year = The Street Profits
- As stated before, they won the tag titles in early March and haven’t lost them. They’re triple crown tag champions. They absolutely deserved this, hands down.
Match of the Year = Boneyard Match
- Not my choice. It’s not even a real match to me.
Superstar of the Year = Drew McIntyre
- Yay! He deserved it. Royal Rumble winner that wins the title at WrestleMania by beating Brock Lesnar, wins the title again later on in the year and finally reached the top of the mountain legitimately. Great. I was hoping he’d win.
