Lucha Underground Season 2 Finale Results and Review

I know I’m a few days late with this article, but I reviewed last year’s finale so I have to do this year’s. I’ve been a huge fan of Lucha Underground since its inception and have not missed an episode. While I did enjoy Season 1 more than I did Season 2, Season 2 was a lot of fun and I was still very hyped for this finale. Last year’s Ultima Lucha finale was pretty damn cool, so I had high hopes for this year’s.

Aero Star, Drago & Fenix def. The Worldwide Underground- *** 1/4

From a booking stand-point, I thought this was the right match to start off the night. Overall it was a pretty fun, high-energy match to get the crowd warmed up. Although the initial energy was there, I feel like the match itself could’ve been much better. The heel shenanigans that happened during the middle of the match really slowed the pacing. It eventually picked back up again creating an exciting finish. I’m glad Aero Star, Drago & Fenix won. All really hard-working guys that are highly entertaining.

Dragon Azteca Jr. def. Black Lotus via DQ- **

This seemed like the card’s throwaway match, and it definitely shouldn’t have been. This match has been built for awhile through all of the backstage vignettes between Black Lotus, Dario Cueto, Dragon Azteca (in Season One), and Dragon Azteca Jr. The two wrestled an okay match for about 4 minutes and then they were both attacked Pentagon Dark. Why? To hype up Pentagon Dark’s new name before the title match. Alrighty…

Matanza Cueto def. Pentagon Dark- ** 3/4

This match disappointed me. I really wanted to see a hard-hitting, violent, brutal match for the title. For a little bit I saw that match, but it was completely one-sided. Pentagon Dark demolished Matanza for a good portion of the match and then all of a sudden it ended… out of nowhere. Matanza hit Pentagon once with a barbed wire baseball bat that Pentagon brought in, hit his finisher and pinned Pentagon for the 1, 2, 3. I get Matanza winning, I had no problem with that, but at least make the match 50/50. I expected a little more from a title match on the biggest show of the year.

Taya def. Ivelisse- ** 1/2

I really don’t have a whole lot to say about this match. I didn’t have much interest in it, the build up was meh, and the overall product was just meh too. The Catrina interference at the end was the most exciting thing. I’m looking forward to see what Ivelisse and Catrina do next season.

Rey Mysterio Jr. def. Prince Puma- **** 1/4

This match was really awesome, and definitely a show saver. Rey and Puma put on a really exciting match that showed not only how great Puma is, but showed that Rey still has it. This was Rey’s best match in probably 6-7 years. I’m not quite sure if having Rey win was the best choice, but he didn’t really pick up a lot of wins during the regular season so it’s alright to see him win one here. It’s probably one of his last big wins on a big stage like that looking at his age/health.

Post Card

After all of the matches ended, Pentagon Dark came out and beat the crap out of Vampiro. Fingers crossed we get to see a rematch between the two of them for Season 3. After that, we get a shot of Dario Cueto being arrested and shoved into a police car off to jail, but Cueto had a smirk on his face as the video goes black.

Overall Thoughts:

I think the show as a whole was alright, but underwhelming. The opening and closing matches were the only real highlights. The middle of the show was really boring and nothing to really rewatch and talk about. I am really excited about Season 3 especially with the acquisitions of Dr. Wagner Jr. and Sami Callihan (NXT’s Solomon Crowe). I do hope Ultima Lucha Tres is better than Dos, but we’ll see what happens. I have not lost faith in the wacky world of Lucha Underground!
