eWN’s Round Table Preview of AEW Revolution 2020

5) “Who SHOULD win between Cody and MJF?”

MANGO: In terms of who I think would benefit the most from a win, it’s definitely MJF. But in terms of the story, it should be Cody. He should get his revenge. However, nothing is on the line here, so they can easily put some extra stank on MJF by giving him another win. What I’d like to see them do, though, is flip the script. Give Cody the win and make it so MJF is the one who wants a rematch. Then, Cody can set up some stipulations that MJF will have to do to earn it. I still think they would be missing an opportunity if they have Cody NEVER able to challenge for the world title again. So, the final straw would be that MJF would offer an “out” for that and say that if Cody beats him, he can fight for the title again. Then, Cody can win that, too. It sucks to say that MJF would lose both matches, but I think he should be the next champion after whoever beats Jericho, so they can make up for it with that. If MJF wins this, where does he go as the champion is a heel?

CARTER: I think MJF goes over. Cody is pretty much bulletproof with the AEW fans after that lashing and the cage match. I would prefer Cody go over though.

STAPLE: I think it may stifle MJF’s momentum if he goes through all that trouble to degrade Cody only to lose, but Cody’s played such a fantastic underdog baby face here that it will be hard to deny him a victory.

MITCHELL: I like the use of “should” here. That can go either way, to me. If Cody wins, MJF finally gets his comeuppance and maybe the story ends. If MJF wins, that perpetuates the story, which has been pretty good. I don’t think I can decide.

ABSLER: This is another tough one for me but I think MJF should win. Cody CAN afford a loss here considering that AEW is partly his company and he is adored by most fans. AEW creative can easily create a stipulation or storyline where Cody can challenge for the AEW title once again, but as for now, it is very early in the history of AEW and MJF needs this win. His credibility would take a hit if he lost, but if he won, especially if it wasn’t clean, the heat on him would turn nuclear. If you though MJF was one of wrestling’s biggest heels now, just wait until he beats Cody.

SCAFIDE: AEW in 1995 would have Cody win by a mile. MJF gets what he deserves and no one would bat an eye. But it’s 2020 and unlike hindsight, MJF should win this match pretty decisively and set up for a “Double or Nothing Death Match” at, well, Double or Nothing on May 23rd. I mean, I’m no writer or anything, just a silly fan.

CASSADA: Cody is the biggest babyface in AEW and everyone’s going to be rooting for him. However, MJF needs the win to create more heat for his heel character. At Revolution, I see MJF stealing a win with the help of Wardlow.

COOK: Cody is bulletproof right now with the AEW audience. He can do no wrong. He already lost the chance to wrestle for the AEW World Championship and the fans are still emotionally vested in his matches. He doesn’t need to beat MJF. A victory over Cody bumps MJF up a level. It makes him a future championship contender. More importantly, it’s the best way to continue a story that doesn’t need to end anytime soon. MJF needs to win this match so the AEW fans want him to get his butt kicked that much more the next time he & Cody hook up. Wrestling Feud 101.
