Rollins vs Cena Title for Title? + ‘The Cena Curse’ + Can Rollins win cleanly?

At the beginning of Monday Night Raw this past week Seth Rollins challenges John Cena to a Title versus Title match at Summerslam where the winner will take both the WWE World Heavyweight Championship and the United States Championship.

I was somewhat enjoying this promo, because I felt that Rollins was showing that he can finally fend for himself. However, unlike the raucous crowd in San Jose, my excitement for this feud decreased slightly when we realised that the match at Summerslam which was inevitably going to happen is for both titles. This is because I have always thought that holding/unifying two different single title just eliminates a championship that can be used to develop talent.

As well as this it appears that WWE are advertising the match between Brock Lesnar and The Undertaker to me the main event. This could draw some of the attention away from this match. Despite this I still think that this match will be another big attraction WWE can promote, aside of the Lesnar vs Undertaker fight, not only for Summerslam but also to gain more network subscriptions, which we all now know are definitely needed after the recent subscription numbers have been released.

I can’t help but think that Cena is going to walk out with both titles. This is simply because of ‘The Cena Curse’ that I have seen develop over the past few years. Let me explain. Cast your mind back to the feud the John Cena had with Bray Wyatt, they had several matches that were all of differing in there ‘watchability’. Ultimately John Cena came out on top winning two out of three of their matches. Since this feud with Cena, Bray Wyatt has been having mid-card matches where most of the feuds end abruptly with no meaning (for example the feud with Ryback). Bray Wyatt is now a faction leader with no faction. It was only at the Battleground PPV that Luke Harper came back together with Wyatt and if it wasn’t for Erick Rowan’s injury then I don’t think Luke Harper would have rejoined Bray Wyatt, Harper and Rowan would have probably stayed as a tag team without Wyatt. A similar thing happened to Kevin Owens in his feud with Cena, which seemingly culminated at past PPV of Battleground. The fact that Owens was not victorious in his quest of the United States Championship means he has suddenly been docked from this soon to be main event superstar to and mid-card superstar.

Also I believe that it is a common opinion at the moment that Seth Rollins is a champion that cannot win a clean match by himself. It seemed that in the recent past Rollins has had to have J&J Security and Kane outside the ring so that they could interfere at the moment when Rollins is about to lose his championship. Having said that, since the return of Brock Lesnar there was no J&J or Kane at Battleground due to the destruction that Lesnar caused. Although, Rollins still did not win cleanly since the resurrection of The Deadman caused the match to end as a DQ. Surely at Summerslam there cannot be another interference, it doesn’t make sense. So, the question is can Seth Rollins score a clean victory over Cena?

Taking into consideration both ‘The Cena Curse’ and Rollins’ inability to win a clean match, it all screams out a John Cena victory at Summerslam. This would not only make him the first person to hold both the WWE World Heavyweight Championship and the United Stated Championship, but he would also tie Ric Flair for the most WWE Championship reigns of all time at 16.
